1440p monitor (+1080p multimonitor) usage questions

    Hello,

I got a 1440p monitor for Christmas (Asus ROG Swift pg278qr) and had some questions for anyone who have been using a 1440p and 144hz monitor for a longer period of time, particularly as a multimonitor set up.

I have the ROG Swift as my main (center) monitor in a triple set up. It is flanked by two older (but very good) 24 inch Asus monitors, both 60hz 1080p ones. The card used is a GeForce 1070. The ROG swift is connected with DisplayPort, while the two other monitors are connected with HDMI and DVI respectively (the Geforce 1070 has one HDMI and one DVI and a bunch of display ports).

(Q1) it might just be my eyes with the new ROG Swift screen, but it seems like the brightness from the other two monitors, particularly the DVI one that used to be my center monitor, is less than they were previously. It looks almost somewhat "dulled" and less vibrant. Is this just my eyes, or what could this be? Is this some weird interaction of Gsync and non-Gsync or just the various plug standards I'm using? Or is it just my imagination.

(Q2) This new monitor is gorgeous for gaming and graphics where obviously I want 1440p and 144hz, but I find 1440p very unideal for browsing the internet. Things seem to small, and webpages right and left sides (beyond the typical view of a 1080p monitor) often showed up flawed. I took to getting a Chrome shortcut to automatically zoom in on all Web pages to 134% zoom, simulating what sites looked like at 1080p. Do people do this? Should I just man up and deal with the smaller text and strange rendering of 1440p for web browsing? Is there a better way to deal with it than a zoom plugin which causes webpages to "studder" whenever I visit them (it renders them at 100% for a moment before zooming to 134%).

(Q3) This screen is gorgeous, but I'm going to use it for hours every day. It's going to get dust on it. It's going to get marks on it from when I touch the screen sometimes, or when I'm yelling at raid a some spit gets on the screen. You know... it's going to get used. Considering this is a bit nicer than a $120 PoS, is a "screen protector" for something like this a thing? Or is it just the kind of deal where the best thing I can do is just clean it with non-alcoholic screen cleaner or distilled water on a microfiber cloth once a month?

    Thanks!

I don't have a screen protector for my ASUS ROG PG279Q. It's pretty much got a built in protector due to the quality of the screen and I can easily just wipe anything off.

As for the brightness or contrast issue, have you tried lower them on the screens with issue? Or increasing it on your main screen. Usually the best way to calibrate colors on a monitor is to jack brightness and contrast to 100 and adjust RGB for most lifelike color.

Q1: Probably just your eyes, or the new one being brighter, making the other ones seem dull in comparison

Q2: Maybe use your secondary or tertiary display for browsing? Alternatively you could set your scaling in Windows to 125/150%

Q3: Just wipe it down with water, it'll be fine

As for number one, your new monitor is TN your old ones are probably IPS, the TN panels generally are brighter out of the box it seems, we had to lower our brightness.

Hey, I've been using Asus ROG PG278q for couple of years along with one or two 24 inches 60Hz monitors.
    1. It's just your eyes, adjust brightness on big one if it's too much
    2. I'm ok with size of fonts and other stuff on main monitor, I just don't put the monitir too far from me. AFAIK you can configure scaling in windows/linux, not sure you can do this per monitor tho.
    3. Plz, don't use screen protector, there is no point to do this. Just wipe it with non-alcoholic screen cleaner as you said, it'll be ok.

Make sure to set the output dynamic range to full since Nvidia can default to a more limited color output on monitors connected via HDMI.

Here's a good article explaining the issue.

I use this monitor. Unfortunately, it's not as technically gorgeous as it looks. This one has opticronix panel or something. It's not a good panel. Also, it seems that 1440p 144hz panels have some gamma issues, or maybe I am one of those lottery losers. In dark/saturated colors, gradients do not exist, it's all bands. As for your zoom thing, maybe it's your eyes. Yes, things are a bit small, but often I do not zoom in. Characters in this page at normal zoom is a bit small, 110 looks a bit too big for me.

The the build quality is mediocre. I think it can take normal monitor usage, some "spit" here and there. One problem is the panel is too matt. In my case, white protective stuff coming out of the box left a minimal mark. Dry cleaning doesn't seem to help. It needs a wet solution, but I am too lazy too find the one I have. I also do not think you need to clean it with solution or something, unless you have a mark. You can just dry-wipe the dusts.

All in all, I do not think you need protective screen etc. Just make sure you do not damage the monitor physically. And by the way, Acer is selling the same fucking panel from opticronix way cheaper than Asus.

note: Knowing you are a programmer, this monitor is not suitable for long coding sessions. Be warned.

Ehh I prefer 1080p monitors with many hertz. Whats the purpose of going 1440p? YouTube videos are almost never in that format and so are numerous things.

What's the purpose of going 1080p over 720p? Youtube is hardly a priority when you're talking about a gaming monitor, although many channels are uploading in 4k these days so 1440p already is a benefit over 1080p in that regard as well.
