DARPA Wants to Build Conscious Robots Using Insect Brains

“Nature has forced on these small insects drastic miniaturization and energy efficiency, some having only a few hundred neurons in a compact form-factor, while maintaining basic functionality,” reads a document in the proposal. “Furthermore, these organisms are possibly able to display increased subjectivity of experience.” It goes on to say that there’s evidence suggesting that “even small insects have subjective experiences, the first step towards a concept of ‘consciousness.'”

The people who brought you the internet are offering a million dollar prize.

Nobody knows what consciousness is, you can find half a dozen definitions on the internet. I think chimps are certainly conscious, dogs probably are, but insects? I don't know.

Heres the pdf that explains how to win the million dollars: https://www.fbo.gov/utils/view?id=bb...4e93fea8efbacf

Why not use the brains from convicts who are on death row?

Whats so unethical about it... I think that a bill concerning this topic would have a high chance of passing congress.

Which part are you having trouble with? The part where you are killing a person for their brain, regardless of what they were in life, assumingly without their permission? On something completely untested and with no clue whether or not it is even possible... just cause they were convict..?

Did you miss the part about death row convicts?

They will serve a greater purpose now... for mankind.

Hmm. A matrix of insectoid brains, would that make it a HIVE MIND??

I should be at DARPA for like, even just $1k a week, to sit in a chair and broadcast the Jeff Goldblum "you never stopped to consider if you should" clip at every desk when someone comes up with an eye like this.

No, it wouldn't. Even convicts retain some degree of bodily autonomy, even after death. You can't force anyone to donate organs.

I mean if I'm dead anyway then who cares. It's not like I'll ever go "Oh I wish I kept my brain when I died" :P
It's a shame that Shadowlands killed PvE twinking. Still I enjoy the game.

Convicted murderers doesn't have any rights and this would be great for getting more troops for the military.

Governments around are planning, or already have, to make everyone a donor unless you opt-out.
