How can you even know if a portuguese person speaks american, isn't it just english with a portuguese accent?
The categories are spelling and vocabulary so I am assuming this is a data that measured those differences. For example the differences between the words below would make it British or American:

    Vocabulary:

    chips vs fries

    Spelling

    Colour vs Color

    I'm from Norway,
when it comes to spelling I always try to keep it British English, but I probably use a lot of American words without even thinking about it / realising.

It's American culture, all those movies and TV shows.

In lot's of places around the world, people will say, 'do you speak American?'

I work in a hotel, and usually when I speak to guests from Great Britain (we get a LOT of Irish people, for example), they say I sound like an American.
FYI I have never been to America in my entire life and acquired almost all of my vocabulary from online forums, games and tv shows.

    I'm German btw.

More people are saying Y'all in Aussie..

Which is ok because we are Southerners.. (Southern Hemisphere).

I can never tell the difference between a Canadian or American accent when I run into someone from either Canada or USA.

Someone told me to always ask if they are Canadian first, as a Canadian will feel insulted if you call them American..

I think that is silly, but I now always ask "are you Canadian" first.

Bump into them. If they say sorry first, they are canadian.
