    The term 'BiS'

Every so often I come across something in WoW that I should know, but is suddenly confusing.

What does BiS mean, to you?

Last night a helm dropped that was an upgrade for me. Let's call it helm 1. I went to various guides before rolling and seen that it was listed as BiS. I said this in my note, but as we discussed the helm, someone replied to me saying it's not my BiS, in fact helm 2 is much better. I was fuzzy thinking at the time and let it go.

Today I asked around and people are saying that the guy that simmed using dropoptimizer, is an idiot, because he simmed my current gear. Meaning that helm 1 is better for me over helm 2, right now, but helm 1 is still BiS overall.

That brings me onto what BiS actually means, because I'm getting a lot of conflicting information. I always thought BiS means 'the best possible gear set' so if I had the that list, it'd be the best I could have. Other people say BiS lists are trash and they say because it doesn't take into account your current gear. Which, as I wrote above, is what got that other guy called an idiot. Some people also say BiS just means 'a good piece of gear'

So what do you think about BiS lists?

    1. Does BiS mean 'this item is best in slot' IF you have every other item on this list.
    2. Does BiS mean 'this item is the best item you can get right now with your current gear'

"Best in slot" just means that if you're lucky to get that one piece you won't remove it from the slot whatever happens.
If you change gear depending on boss fights or raid / dungeon, it's no longer "Best in slot" but "Best for that one activity"

To me bis is only bis if it WF's or TF's (apart from azorite armor) otherwise it is never a best in slot item for me. especially if other items forges, shakes up the stat requirements that can influence other '' bis'' etc etc.. God do i hate WF/TF.

Depends what class/build you play and what environment you're in, for the same item slot you might have few different items considered as BiS. FOR SOME CLASSES there is no universal meaning of BiS anymore, so people tend to use that term very casually now

So you prefer the "I've got my BiS, done the achieves, downed the final boss, I'm done I can unsub until next tier" way?
The most difficult thing to do is accept that there is nothing wrong with things you don't like and accept that people can like things you don't.

BiS gear no longer exists or not really obtainable. When I say bis I mean good secondary stats or azerite traits.

Ofcourse, who would possibly want to play an endless casino and chase TF items for every slot. I'm @ around 398-400 ilvl now, still running with 370 trinket because i cba and i'll probably go to next raid tier with the same trinket, because titanforging is one of the absolute worst things in the game

Nowadays you have 2 BiS, the item that is the best possible combination of secondary stats / traits and then you have the version of that piece that has rolled socket, tertiary and max titanforge.

There is no such thing as "BiS" anymore, as bis is unreachable now - it would include all items max titanforged with socket and tertiary stats.

Bis always implies that it is a full set of items, because only then you can say it is bis.

Your second definition makes no sense, how can it be BiS relative to your current gear or progression? Is it possible that you get pants next week that have different secondary stats, so the head that you considered bis last week now sims worse than your previous helmet because due to the change of secondary stats on your pants your stat or trait priority has changed? Or a different chest with said trait, but you only need that specific trait once.

Bis has no meaning anymore. If you compare things now, all you can compare is what a performance increase that single item gives using the gear you currently wear.

It's a remnant of the past people haven't moved on from. There is no such thing as bis anymore.

It means the best item you can have in that gear slot for the the current patch.

Titanforging and warforge make it more complex but that is the general meaning.

Glad to know you approve of less content in the game. You must be part of a very tiny minority.

You have to understand that there is a major difference between an actual content and running the same content over and over and over again untill you wanna throw up, because rng is not on your side

This is how wow was designed from the start. You kill a boss over and over until you get lucky and get what you want. And then you keep killing him over and over so that others can get what they want too. At least now you have multiple choices on what to do/kill - aka more "actual content".

In relation to the helm just say to your guildies that it has best traits for you instead of using bis.

BiS is the best possible item you can get in that slot, as part of the best possible set of gear you can achieve.

So say you have 3 tier items, legs chest and helmet (when they were still a thing) and then some tier shoulders dropped, they might not neccesarily be BiS. Sure, you'd have a big advantage currently as it finished the 4 set but the BiS could be the gloves, and an off-set piece BiS for shoulders when you take in mind the ideal full set of gear.

The thing that saddens me most with all the titanforging/random gem slots is that achieving a "BiS" gear set isn't realistically achievable anymore.

I used to feel super EPIC when I finally managed to get it all completed and finished, and it felt like a real achievement for my character to get it done while the raid was still current. Now you're just stuck permanantly grinding in the hopes of a tiny chance of RNG in your favour.

I came from a period where you also helped gear up your mates in yer guild, not just yourself. And if your guild is good enough you can bring in alts for new flavour if you do not have it in you to play with others.

You have to understand that if it's in the game it's content and whining and saying something "isn't content" because you say so is like saying the sky isn't blue because you say it isn't.

BiS no longer exist with titanforging.
