Also I really don't get the Phil Jones hate, he's a great squad player, he puts 100% effort in on the pitch and in training, and he fights for every ball.

But he makes a few clangers like every defender (Vidic vs Torres every time anyone?) and makes weird faces and he gets shit on.

I don't doubt his effort, it's just he is a very average player, who should really be a mid table club, rather than at a club with short-medium term aspirations of winning the league. Also he earns £2.5 million a year. The cheek!

He seems to make more mistakes than other defenders, but that could just be confirmation bias.

Real Madrid win the Madrid derby. Can't say I'm sad at Atletico losing but I would never cheer for Real Madrid. Anyway, Real Madrid certainly look more pragmatic with the play and are getting results because of it. Just in time for the CL to start for them I guess.

Agree about Martial. I like Mata as well but just never had the athleticism to be an absolute top player. I'm not a big fan of De Gea though.

Phil Jones will always be one of those "what ifs?" players. When SAF signed him to the team from Blackburn he was a young promising CB who at that time could be the next star-CB both in PL and the English national team. He's been unfortunate with injuries that have disrupted many of his seasons and I think also the rotating doors of managers since he joined (at the very end of the SAF-era) hasn't helped him either.

At this stage extending his contract feels more like a "thank you for your service" than warranted based on his performances. I don't really have a big dislike for him, he might not be the best CB but he's a perfectly fine squad player in my opinion, like 4th choice for the spot. You look at what the other top teams have it's not like their 4th choices are much better.

As for Scholes and Oldham, I like it better than other former United players who go straight to top league appointments, he's a great reader of the game and can cut his teeth in the lower leagues.
