It’s even worse if you consider democrats already building a wall, with democrats supporting open borders. It’s just further evidence that the wall is simply a vanity project for Trump.

At some point people need to stop thinking so macro. The supermarket down the corner will not have a warehouse attached with an automated loading bay; heck for many products it only keeps the stock you can see in the shelf. For perishables, they are several times per week. Small quantities of goods.
Not to mention the ecological disaster that what you are proposing is. Even more packaging, from harder materials, with even more wasted volume to make everything look neat for the robot. God forbid water damage on packaging blurring the barcode. Or one package flipped and is facing the wrong side!

I am thinking overall, never said that automation would replace 100% of jobs, but it is on course to replace a lot of them. And many grocery stores are moving to have a delivery model as well which may pan out in the future.

In some places Amazon already delivers groceries the same day you order them if you are close enough to their places and are looking into drones for delivering smaller stuff.

And as far as the ecological disaster due to excess packaging, they don't need mountains of excess packaging, if done right, many items might end up with the same as now or the shapes of what they are carrying is changed to make it easier.

As far as the barcode, they can go like what our local Walmart does with their bottled water and the barcode is literally stretched across half the package so they can just can it almost anywhere and have it register.
