Thumbs down Chicago reports 24 shootings and five murders in one weekend

    source

Twenty-four shootings and five murders took place across Chicago over the weekend amid a spike in gun violence in the third-largest US city, police say.

Two children were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a gathering on Saturday.

The most recent fatal shooting occurred on Sunday morning. A 52-year-old man was found dead with a bullet wound to the head.

Last year Chicago recorded 561 murders, more than the two biggest US cities - New York and Los Angeles - combined.

There were 44 murders in Chicago in the first two months of 2019.

The two children shot on Saturday were injured while attending a baby shower in the South Side. They are in a critical but stable condition.

Police say the shooting could have "stemmed from an ongoing gang conflict" in the area.

Later on Saturday, a 19-year-old man was shot dead in the south of the city as he was standing outside with a friend.

Shots were fired at him from a vehicle, the Chicago Sun Times reported. The friend is said to be in a good condition.

On Sunday morning, a 32-year-old man was shot in the back, also in the South Side. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Last August, Chicago Police asked for more help to combat gun violence following a spate of shootings over one weekend.

Chicago police say that as of 1 March, they had seized more than 1,600 illegal guns this year. The figures equate to one illegal gun taken off the street every 53 minutes.
I think something really needs to be done about these gangs.

indianapolis had 6 gun deaths over the weekend.

Those two children would have been killed if the murderer was throwing knives into the crowd as well I'm sure, no reason to restrain access on the most effective personal tool for murder in existence.

Do you feel like pointing out murders are down another 20% this year compared to last year, and 40% from 2 years ago or you just feel like shitting on Chicago for one bad weekend?

I'm not surprised at all. On a slightly offtopic note, I saw a headline yesterday that said London had a higher murder rate than New York now. Thought that was interesting.

It has actually been dropping in Chicago and overall, the homicide/crime rate period has dropped across the nation as a whole. Some increases in some big cities. https://www.statista.com/chart/14260...ities-in-2017/

In Ohio, the sections of the big cities you look at have the highest crime and homicide rates. Baltimore, Maryland, remains the number one city for homicide rates in the nation.

Yeah but when the number is high to begin with and it drops a small %, I wouldn't call that successful. That's like a family with kids losing 2 one year and only 1 the next year saying "well at least are kid death rate went down 50%"

Oh, I am not going to dismiss it as no big deal. That was not my intent. But it does help to show it is getting a little better.

That is a good point. When you are a victim, the statistics do not mean shit.

So 20% reduction per year for the last 2 years isn't significant to you? Where's your post about Indianapolis having 6 murders in one day this weekend?

Being this ignorant to the topic.

I'm certainly not one to jump on the bandwagon and proclaim that Chicago is proof that gun control cannot work, but I will say that Chicago is proof that reactionary gun control isn't very effective, and this is clearly a social problem and not a gun access one.

Chicago's gun laws were ruled unconstitutional about 5 years ago, just before the murder rate spiked significantly (I'm sure they're not related).

Common sense would be to you know, close the southern border to the flow of drugs and gang bangers. Let the police do their jobs instead of sending them to sensitivity training, spending funds/time on body cam usage and perhaps letting the average citizen arm themselves in self-defense.

As it is Chicago is getting exactly what it voted for, the policies its political overlords have demanded their subjects live under and sorry to say I only feel bad for the children involved.

Any adult in Chicago deserves the city they’ve endorsed through years of stupid voting. Oh and they voted in 3-4 Democratic Socialists and their new black lesbian mayor who checked off all the diversity boxes will be a much needed positive influence on the city. I’m sure the common sense will only flow in much greater quantity than has previously existed.....

Because it is physically impossible to go to one of the surrounding states to get a legal firearm, right?

    /facepalm

This pattern is not unique to Chicago. States with tougher gun laws often discover that places with more lax legislation are the source of many of the firearms used in crimes.

Last year, the attorney general of New York issued a report about the flow of guns into his state. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman identified what he called the “iron pipeline,” a string of East Coast states through which guns flowed into the state.

In New York City, for example, nearly 9 in 10 firearms come from out of state.

Most of the murders are happening in predominately black areas, I'm quite sure black Americans are coming from Mexico....
