You never actually argued why it's frustrating they pointed out she's a woman. Why would you be frustrated about that?

if it were some 60 year old white man jumping for joy, i would be just as frustrated. this is a huge deal for science, but it's like the news thinks we are too dumb to comprehend or care about it unless they add a reaction video or picture.

i'm 32 years old. i've grown up seeing women fire fighters, police, astronauts, doctors, race car drivers, etc. this is very normal to me. i've never questioned it. if a woman is the best person for the job, she should get the job. but now it's like this "hey guys, women are powerful!" it pisses me off that it's such a key talking point these days. it's never been abnormal to me.

i don't want to sound like a crazy person, but i swear the media spins shit and reports things in a manor that makes modern men feel like we've been oppressive our (my) whole lives which just isn't the case. i don't like being villainized.

i'm not saying it doesn't happen, but in my time i've seen many women doing just fine, far better than a lot of men.

What's more surprising is a grad student getting actual recognition. Given the fact that projects like these are often composed of at least tens, sometimes hundreds of different scientists (ranging from those with decades of experience, down to us lowly post grads, even undergrads). Often the younger contributors are overlooked.

Obviously grad students don't get the credit: Katie Bouman graduated in 2017 and will start as assistant professor later this year, whereas Sara Issaoun (who co-led one of the other teams) is a Ph.D. student.

I would say that the major change recently is the growing importance of being visible in the media and Katie Bouman has made a TEDx about the subject (but it seems those ideas weren't directly used).

I wouldn't be surprised if this one grad student was given the job of 'DO ALL THE CODE' which could well be the case.

I think the issue people are taking offence with is that she only wrote 50,000 lines of code not the rest of the 850,000 and you have to really search for the guy's name who did that...

majority of code was what though? It says right in the fucking article by the fucking guy it was mostly model code and data and the guy said of actually written code there were maybe 65k lines so if she wrote 50k lines... that's a lot of fucking percentage, let's do simple math!

They didn't use her algorithm. She didn't create anything they used and she only wrote 1600 of the 800k or so lines of code.

This isn't a conspiracy theory, this isn't a sexist rant. It's common fucking sense and it took a team many people and dozens of research facilities contributed. Jesus christ, I hate the race to see what genitals a person has between their legs instead of the magnificent discovery that was made.

The only one with misogynistic views is you. Completely minimizing and removing the role that women have played and recieved credit for with regards to scientific discovery in much of history. Instead you remove the credit from the team as a whole and want to give to one singular women who while she played an important role was part of 200 plus people including other women. The problem is what she "discoved" is garbage.
That picture is completely useless.

If it is something useful, we would be happy for her.

The picture basically proves that Einstein's theories hold up even at the greatest extremes of gravity and matches the simulation created under that assumption. That is far from useless. The probelm is the work of the 200 person team being minimized the work was incredibly important.

Bouman's getting personal recognition because it's her innovations and leadership that produced the result. This is totally normal reporting procedure. It doesn't mean she did all the work, and nobody's arguing that.

Nobody would have blinked if her name was David Bouman and the story was reported in exactly the same manner.

The story wouldn't be constantly popping up if it was a dude and nobody would be screaming sexism when he and others of the project were also pushing to recognize the team as a whole. But hey it's totally not misogynistic to treat a women being part of a great scientific achievement like it was a miracle or anything.

Dip shits on social media are making it out to be all her, but I have yet to read a publication that doesnt give full credit and respect to the entire team, and most articles don't even focus on her. If you look at the code on GITHub (its open source), you can see she committed lots of code. So did a other people. These people worked their asses off, there are hundreds of thousands of lines of code in this project.
