    Discovery and Orville

What are your thoughts on these two shows?

I admit, when they first came out, the Orville was more enjoyable and entertaining, but Discovery just got better and better and better, and for me now out classes the Orville both for entertainment and quality.

I still watch and enjoy both, so glad I don't have to choose, but what are your thoughts here?

If The Orville had just come 1 year earlier or 2, I think it would have been hugely successful and Discovery might never have happened even, or maybe its success would have motivated them more.

I don’t watch Discovery because I won’t support a major network having their own streaming service. But all I can say is season two of The Orville was phenomenal. It went from a bit of a goof, that I only watched because I like Seth MacFarlane, to a legitimately great show. From the two part episode on, it was somehow among the best shows on television. It was a shocking jump in quality, and they managed to do all that with me hating the casting change for the security officer.

Yeah, the Orville is incredible, and I've enjoyed every episode i've watched, a great balance between goofiness and action too, with humour you can't go wrong with. It has had some incredible moments, Season 2 was better than Season 1 - but, Discovery - even better - while it doesn't quite have the humour of the Orville or the goofiness, I found it a phenomenal production of the highest quality, more entertaining than the Orville and better done. And that is saying something because the Orville is excellent fun to watch.

And I'm not aTrekkie or a Star Wars nut, i like sci-fi, and if its good its good, i won't say star trek is better out of fan loyalty or any such thing..it truly is remarkable - it's a shame one of htem dind't come earlier, cos there was a massive hole in the "traditional" space sci-fi show - something that neither Dark Matter or Killjoys cme even close to filing. And while I like the Expanse, it's a very differrent kinda sci-fi space show, quite good in its own way but not enough to fill the spot.

I just finished the Orville, it's ok I guess but I disliked the fact it kinda got a lot more serious the second half of the second season. I also agree with hating the casting change for the security officer, the previous one was ultra qt and the new one is pretty much a Mary Sue.

    I'm gonna watch Discovery eventually.

She left to switch away from acting into directing, it isn't like they removed her from the show. Her final show she actually directed. If it was up to me Halston Sage would still be on the show as Alara and I am glad they didn't keep Patrick Warburtons character on as her replacement. Nothing against him, but that character sucked.

Discovery is amazing on season 2. Looking forward to season 3.

Have not watched the Orville. Not sure i even need to... it's just a comedy spoof isn't it?

While I like both, I still feel that Discovery is more deeply flawed. Mostly because Discovery's main character is just such a bad concept that their either need to change the whole character all at once, get rid of her, or spend way to much time changing her horribleness.

It's basically Star Trek with MacFarlane's writing. Half comedic half serious. It's definitely worth a watch.

The Orville has it's moments. I'm a fan.

I first thought it was going to be a straight comedy/parody show with no serious storytelling, world building, or character development. I am very surprised it has all of these with linear storytelling and overarching narratives with all of the comedy aspects.

My favorite character is Isaac by far.

Orville is a more light hearted Star Trek.
Discovery is a Star Wars with more ship focus.

It actually feels more like MacFarlane just wanted to make a straight up Star Trek: TNG revival and pitched it but got turned down so pitched it as a parody instead and then slowly removed most of the parody elements over the first season. The majority of the random quips and one liners are gone in the second season and the only real humor comes from the occasional pop-culture reference or character moment. Many of the episode plot-lines feel like they really could be just left over scripts from Next Gen. If you at all enjoyed Next Gen, Deep Space 9, or Voyager, you will likely enjoy The Orville. If you like the over the top action that Star Trek has turned into with the movies or Discovery, maybe not.

From what I can gather (I’ve not seen Orville)

Discovery is a trek show for people that don’t like trek.

Orville is a non trek show, that Trekkies will love.

So, as someone that wasn’t hugely into trek before, and has a bit of a crush on Sonequa Marten-Green I have it a try, and it’s pretu good. Season 1 started slow, but when mental after mid season. Season 2 was insane from the get go and set up (potentially) huge things for season 3. Hype!

Sure, that works too XD. Like I said, I’m not really a Trekkie, but a few of my Trekkie friends aren’t big fans of the show, and if you check the discovery thread in this forum, you’ll see some of the standard complaints.

Discovery didn't really do much for me. I saw the first episode and didn't care that much for it, but then they busted out that "Get [whatever streaming service CBS was pushing] if you want to continue watching past the first episode!" shit, and that killed any remaining interest I had in the show.

Not that I don't like Star Trek (I grew up on TNG and consider that one of my top 5, and I was also a fan of both Voyager and DS9), but Discovery just failed to keep me interested.

I haven't gotten around to Orville yet, but it looks amusing. From what I can tell, it looks like a less serious version of Star Trek.

Why insult people who don't like the show?

Oddly enough, some of the things they cover get quite serious. I particularly like anything involving the Moclan race. At first they seem like it will be just a Klingon copy, but it is an all male race and they use that for some pretty interesting stories that are handled much better than I would have thought for a Seth MacFarlane series.

It is honestly really good and since you are such a big TNG fan, I highly recommend checking it out.

You can certainly be a Trek fan and like Discovery. But that doesn't mean you're liking it as a Trek fan. Discovery (and the new movies) are far more akin to Star Wars than Star Trek.

Seth is a good writer. Do remember, Family Guy hasnt really had his input in years.

I think Discovery is a good Sci-Fi show... it's just not a good Star Trek show imo.

Orville is too goofy for my taste
All right, gentleperchildren, let's review. The year is 2024 - that's two-zero-two-four, as in the 21st Century's perfect vision - and I am sorry to say the world has become a pussy-whipped, Brady Bunch version of itself, run by a bunch of still-masked clots ridden infertile senile sissies who want the Last Ukrainian to die so they can get on with the War on China, with some middle-eastern genocide on the side
