This remove star trek from Disco and its a good show.. as part of star trek it fails. The season finale trying to "Fix" things lore wise was something i joked at work they would do and they did it ... still doesn't make sense but oh well.

Orville is amazing and one of if not my favorite show on TV right now.

Really liking Discovery, great visuals on the show, my one grip would be it's a bit too focused on one character (Burnham), but even that's not that bad. I do also enjoy Orville, but with Orville, after being a Star trek tng fan and watching that for years Orville just seems a bit too familiar.

I find that's part of its charm. The goofiness makes it more grounded while still letting the overall tone be more upbeat. Like the older trek shows. People arnt 100% perfect and professional all the time so seeing them be goofy just makes it feel more realistic.

Exactly this yeah, a bad trek but a good show.

I thought Discovery was awful. The first half of season one was pretty good, but from then onward it was downhill all the way and season two is really bad. So much so that I couldn't wait for it to end. I'd love to get a count of how many times Michael cries per episode. That became extremely tedious as the episodes went on. The only saving grace was Captain Pike and it'd be much better if the series focused on him.

The Orville is much better and feels more like Star Trek and an extension of TNG.

    The Orville for me too

Discovery is alot more action packed but the focus 90% on Michael Burnham that is for me (and i see from many others) kills the show because the writing and the acting she has to do because of it. If the focus was in Pike (season 2) for ex probably would be alot better but with her it just doesn't work

I will see season 3 if its made but if its still about her after 2 seasons i'm totally done with the show

Discovery went from a terrible pilot to a middling to good first season to a spectacular second season, though a lot of that was down to Captain Pike, so I worry how the show will do without him. He was just so damn inspiring, like a ship lead by a paladin. A real antidote to all the cynicism and grimdark that's popular in media these days. Burnham is an absolutely textbook Mary Sue though, and the way the network advertises the show like she's the first black person on star trek or something is just cringe.

Orville started out great and has stayed great. I miss the hell out of Alara, but Keyali is pretty cool too, she's growing on me. Orville may not have the budget that discovery does, but the big battle in the two parter still looked incredible, one of if not the best space battle I've ever seen on TV. Great balance of humor and serious storytelling, but I think that two parter was the milestone where it stopped just being a Trek parody and became its own universe with worldbuilding I care about.

I'm just happy to say I watch both, I love both, and screw people who present it like some kinda rivalry where you have to choose a side.

Orville isn't what I'd call amazing compared to other sci-fi shows I currently love (like the Expanse), but it did suprise me the McFarlane could produce a series this decent outside of cartoon comedy.

I actually enjoyed Discovery S1, as long as I didn't think too hard about it being Star Trek.

I really enjoy Orville, which has a more TNG feel to me.

I haven't taken the time to check out either yet, despite being a big Trek fan, but I've seen and heard vastly more promising things about the Orville than STD. Even some of the screencaps and gifs I've seen from the Orville look almost like they could have been pulled out of one of the episodes of the older Trek shows.

STD might have the official license, but from what little I've heard and seen, it seems to lack both the look and soul of Star Trek. I have heard that season 2 has supposedly been better, specifically because they actually tried to for a more classic Trek approach this time, but I've still heard some incredibly silly things as well. I also thought I heard that they might be splitting it up into two different shows, one that continues the dramatic grimdark of STD, and another that is more like classic Trek, helmed by the new Pike from season 2? I might actually be interested in checking out the latter, since I've heard that much of season 2's improvements were as a result of Pike's addition.

I'm also a bit more excited for the Patrick Stewart-helmed Star Trek project, if that ever actually gets off the ground. I'm still hoping it ends up being "The West Wing in Space", with the now-Ambassador Picard dealing with the political and diplomatic turmoil of a post-Dominion War Alpha/Beta Quadrant. It would be nice to finally move on in the "main timeline", instead of having yet another prequel or relaunch movie/series.

Haha. I thought so too. Pleasantly surprised.

I agree with everything here apart from Burnham. Love her character and think she is amazing. Pike was a great addition to the show too

S2 of Orville was a bit of a let down for me. To many of what I call "Worfs son comes to visit" Episodes. Not enough cool encounters with aliens and such.

Discovery grew on me in S2 however, I hate the whole thing simply because its set in the past. Its a fine show with some really cool episodes it just annoys me to have it set int he past, further murking up the cannon.

The Half in the Bag, Youtube show did a bit about the first season of the Orville, they showed how each Orville episode pretty much ripped off an episode of Original Star Trek.

Orville keeps getting better. If feels more trek then Discovery for sure.

Parody. That's kind of the point.

I am pretty sure they never did anything specifically about The Orville. They talked about it in one of the episodes about ST Discovery and it wasn't that each episode is a rip off, it was that because they are such big fans of Trek who know every episode inside and out they have a hard time watching the series (even though they both said it was really good) without comparing any similar plot elements to stuff from trek. I actually felt the same way but one thing I find interesting is that while they do use more than a few similar set-ups, they almost always end up going in a different direction that Trek did. A good example is the time capsule episode of Orville. In it, the pilot guy gets the computer to make a holographic version of the girl who owned the cell phone and he end up falling in love with it. This is very similar to the TNG episode where Geordi makes a holographic version of the female scientist so he can work with her to solve some problem and falls for her. Both have pretty much the exact same set up, but the direction they go and eventual outcome are quite different.

I think the Orville got better over time. Season 1 was funny, but all their jokes being centered on 1990-2010 pop culture made no sense for their context. Season 2 developed humor as a more integrated part of the show and was more effective; the stories also got more intense. I miss the cute girl Alara though. I'm glad they were renewed for Season 3 (literally today!).

Discovery has some great effects but that's about it, really. There are zero character to actually care about; no one on the show is like-able except Pike, and you can't really commit to him because you know his brutal fate already. The individual episode stories are usually boring and the season arc feels forced.

I like Discovery but its not one of the better Treks. S1 was a more action oriented sci-fi show with some Trek flourishes. S2 was more properly Trek. Setting it in the time period they chose causes the show to wallow in nostalgia sometimes. S3 looks like it may potentially do something more interesting.

I haven't watched the Orville. Primarily because its not available for streaming in Canada and I don't feel like going out of my to get it. Seth McFarland isn't as funny as he thinks he is either. If it gets picked up for streaming on Crave or Netflix I'll likely check it out.
