Why the hell are unboxing videos so popular?

What is the appeal of watching some untalented dumbass take items out of a box and then say "oooooh aaaaaah thats soooooo cool omg"? I get why people make them, because it allows people with absolutely no talent to rake in cash from youtube if they get lucky. But who the hell watches these things? Even the lowest of the low forms of reality television shows have more entertaining shit going on than this.

Entertainment value wise, i'd rank unboxing videos a good bit below reality TV shows and very, very slightly above watching paint dry.

I like boring stuff more than so called exciting stuff. Depends on the unboxing just like ASMR. I’m more bothered by why anyone seriously gives a fuck what others like. Seriously be a bit less fucking involved with others personal hobbies or interest maybe.

A video of a item is easier to decide the quality on then a image of it.

I get many Collector Edition's of games, Ill watch a unboxing video to see if the quality of the items (like a statue) is worth it.

I do avoid the unboxing videos that does all the flashily bullshit.

A lot of parents watch them for ideas to get presents for their kids.

As someone else said, watching to see the quality makes sense, but outside of those two scenarios, I don't really get it.

The only unboxing video I ever remember watching was one Cory Barlog did with a God of War throne statue thing and even then I only watched it because he was mostly talking about some of his career decisions and turning points while he unboxed it, which I would have watched to listen to without the unboxing, that was just sort of happening on screen as I listened.

Getting a closer look at the delivered contents instead of a lame ass picture on amazone with white backdrop and no point of reference.
Substiteu wishfulfillment for some.
ASMR for others.
I can remember alot of cases when I was young where we would just hang out and spectate someone else do something as a substitute for doing it ourself. The famous watch your friend play the new game. I guess on a primal level that works in video form as well.

I've watched some guy open his mail and take apart vintage electronics before.. I can't judge anymore .

Children like watching people play with/unbox toys I noticed this crap trend being popular amongst kindergardeners and they have fuckton of free time and since they are quiet bad parents allow them to just watch those 10h a day boosting the view count. Teachers at my nephew's kindergarden said that watching those stupid videos + mobile games are basically a plague there.

The problem would be solved if retailers included more useful pictures of items.

Also I could do without virtually all the commentary, very little of it is useful. Some people do an efficient first person view of the thing, others waste a bunch of time on reactions and bullshit when nobody cares about them and only want to see the item.

True that. I was curious if this video was just a fluke or if she actually does more in that space and found one where she talks about "her silicon". Well bad choice in that regard imho, yet I guess if you live in the literal butt-end of every other joke about low quality knock-off tech (shinzen), then making some extra in a way that works helps. Still though, if you go for fake tits go for a size that actually fits your frame, girl - or go all out and install lights as well .

What's the point in any video? What's the point in any form of entertainment? Just because you don't derive enjoyment from it, doesn't mean others shouldn't. I've watched videos of unboxings on things I'm interested in buying due to seeing what else in there. Sometimes online retailers are really bad at saying what specifically could be in a product. Last year I bought my laptop and I was really excited for it, and watched a lot of videos on it and learned a lot of things about my laptop that I otherwise wouldn't have known because the manufacturer didn't provide those details. But according to some of the people in this thread, I'm a child because I've watched unboxing videos?
