I think that the one thing that history has taught us is that the peasants don't stand idly by when their survival is threatened.

the earth has had 5 major extinction events, non of them managed to wipe out all life.
End Ordovician, 444 million years ago, 86% of species lost
Late Devonian, 375 million years ago, 75% of species lost. ...
End Permian, 251 million years ago, 96% of species lost. ...
End Triassic, 200 million years ago, 80% of species lost. ...
End Cretaceous, 66 million years ago, 76% of all species lost.

as far as we know there is no coming back from a 100% eradication of life on earth, we still don't know how life first started, what conditions were needed to change minerals into biological matter, but there fairly certain that process stopped millions of years ago. extinction events usually take out the most complex and thus less adaptable life, this creates room for new complex life to evolve.

but i wouldn't worry about life one earth, the earth has been way hotter than even the max predicted temp from man made global warming and it was teeming with life.

as you can see on that graph our planet is currently the coldest its been for 450million years, global warming would trigger a minor extinction event, one that might end us in the long run, but life as a whole will be perfectly fine and new things will take the place of what died.
Oh, I know from a pure temperature standpoint it's nowhere near as hot as it's been, but yea.

As for the science this what my cousin who has doctorate in environmental science told me.

The earth naturally goes through a cycle of heating up and cooling down, ti's why we have ice ages, what happens is at the very end of the high temp period the stream that carry warm water to the north become less efficient some stop Completly like the gulf stream, this put the earth on a cooling path as warm water an air stop traveling north and the ice caps re freeze and we go back into an ice age, this eventualy hits a terminal point where the streams hit peak efficacy and begin melting the ice. Theres alot more to it as well like trapped carbon and such but for us simple minds that's the major thing.

What global warming is or to be precise man made climet change is actualy just a speeding up of this natural process, these cycles always come with some extinctions but it's a million year cycle this gives time for some to adapt, migrate or evolve, you speed it up and you shorten the time life has to adapt, it won't end all life but alot of cold specialised life will go extinct, and for us humans we can servive and adapt to the temperature, our concern is more from the increase in natural disasters, as the earth heats up it gets more geologically active and the weather gets more extream, so its more earth quakes, volcanos and hurricanes, this means for those living in areas like San fran will find it almost impossible to have a stable metropolitan life there. (though San fran is on borrowed time anyway) the further problem is suffering and resource shortages usualy lead to wars, so what it's really ment as the problem isn't the end of human life, we're actualy very adaptable when we need to be and could easily get through by regressing to hunter gather life styles, we know we have survived at least 2 major die offs as the evidence is in our dna where it bottle necked, but it is potentially the end of modern civilisation.

Stay the course, pretending nothing is wrong, shame and deride anyone who talks about climate change as if it's a man made problem, continue to suck the eets of big oil and conservative donors, and when you see ice on your front doorstep, go "SO MUCH FOR GLOBAL WARMING LOL".

Don't you just love how when it comes to "illegals" voting they'll spend billions of dollars to stop 3 illegals from voting, and demand that it's a super serious problem. Then climate change? "Meh, might as well give up, it's no use."

It's a bit more severe than that. Humans are speeding the "natural processes" to be about 30x as fast as the natural processes, thus we have no clue how nature will manage to cope. ME being someone who got a masters in environmental sciences, focusing on environments of the past compared to today.

Without human interference? The earth was actually headed into a cooling period, but we've forced an extreme warming event.

Not much of anything to do really. I didn't watch the video, but the question should be asked in the most extreme measure, which is: If mankind brought ALL of its climate damaging activities to a complete halt (no vehicles, no commerce, no electricity, etc etc), would it actually change anything or reverse current course in any appreciable amount of time.

Can we just stop blaming and bashing each other. Can we as a people that are all in one boat and that boat has a hole in the bottom and no one can swim. Instead of running around like chickens with our head cut off, "Literally the tone of this thread after I've read all pages". Think of the problem from an engineering standpoint, even if none of us are even remotely close to being engineers.

Problem: Our home is seeing drastic changes in climate, temperature fluctuations, radical storm surges and increases in freak weather events. Based on evidence that people who "SPECIALIZE" in those fields provide. What do "WE" do?

What we should be doing is at least spending time to read about what small changes we can do collectively and individually to better our planet as a whole. It doesn't even have to be expensive or time consuming. Consider buying a Hybrid car, consider recycling programs for home trash, Consider cutting back on the amount of throw away plastics and non-biodegradable plastic. Consider changing our habits of consumer wastefulness. Think of how much "STUFF" we actually use and discard.

Biggest problem is power generation pollution and automobile exhaust pollution. How can 1 person change their habit to make it slightly better for others who cannot make a change. I'm considering purchasing a hybrid car and it will save me 100$ a month and 100 gallons of gas compared to my old truck. Ok, that helps a little bit but, imagine if everyone could do that. I've calculated I would save about 65% fuel costs and fuel consumption per month and up to roughly 2000$ a year and 1200 gallons of gasoline.

To the people refuting climate change. It does not even have to be about climate change though, think of it this way. Park one's car in the garage and close the door, and then start the car. How long will it take before you cannot breathe? Now expand that same idea to a global scale. Does it not make sense we should not be polluting our "home"? I mean, for years generations before today have dumped: chemicals, toxic waste, coal ash, iron slag, refuse, etc into rivers and just left it. I mean countries around the world STILL do this and they even take our garbage from the US and dump it there. In fact some island nations in the South Pacific have MOUNTAINS of computer scrap, silcon chips, old electronics just piled as high as any landfill in the US. That stuff is terrible for any person laying around.

Frankly, it just makes sense to not pollute the air we breathe, the water that gets drank, and the food that gets eaten. Does it not make sense to try and at least try a little harder on an individual scale to rid the planet of waste, garbage, and pollution. I for one do not want to see a planet Earth like in the movie Wall-E. Essentially that's what some countries already look like and all countries will look like sooner or later.

Everyone should try and do a little better for not just themselves but, other people who cannot even afford to feed themselves or their family members. I don't care if the mantra of, "Well why should I help the planet if "they" can't even support themselves either". A very arrogant, ignorant, and selfish statement. Humans are naturally self servant and focused on survival of themselves, it is in our ancient reptilian brains that this comes from. Well I would like to think that our species is at least capable of rational, logical thought. Since we are the only species that is capable of moving more dirt and things on Earth than the entirety of Earth does itself(At least as of 2018). You clean your carpet with a vacuum to keep "your" space clean, well what about the air that you just polluted by mowing the grass outside? I'm not saying become a super green eco friendly person but, small changes over time make a HUGE difference.

Because, WHEN the day comes that we can NO LONGER even breathe, or grow crops, or have drinkable water, is they realization that we've screwed ourselves. It's already slowly changing and happening now and people choose to sit back and point fingers, blame others, and say, "What do I care, I'll be dead". How selfish and ignorant a people is that to think we (humans) are better than other things. To think we are so self absorbed and self important that (humans) are better than each and every other person on this planet. That we somehow could not think to rationalize that we would rather, "Die a slow, painful, choking death, and pollute our air, water, and land". Than to work on something the benefits EVERYTHING in our home from food, land, water, air, our, "space".

If we cannot get even the slightest bit of cooperation, than I can certainly tell that none of "US" are civilized or advanced or rational at all. "We have doomed ourselves into oblivion".

The time was yesterday to start doing something, what can YOU! do as an individual to help all of us and everything else that does not have the ability to change environments.

Us rich countries NEED to lead the way and cut our resources because, the poorest of countries cannot. It's sad really we call ourselves advanced.... Advanced in what way, at what cost.

well its a related field, he would likely have had more focus on the effect of atmospheric chemical composition on global warming, things like the effects of volcanic activity and the rel;ease of carbon traps on the weather and the atmospheric insulation property's.

where as the study of the gulf stream would fall under some marine field but then it is linked to meteorology because it directly effects the weather by the movement of warm air from the gulf to north Europe.

its all linked with each other, a lot of fields involved in climate science from Geoarchaeology to heliophysics (the study of solar activity)

The rising sea levels will at least recycle some of the land masses on earth, and with some of them being deserts maybe it is a good thing and a bad thing.

I am considering getting a Hybrid Car. The issue is that its at least 5k more expensive at my whereabouts and even though i'll save in GAS, the battery replacement will just be almost as the whole savings. I will thought get the hybrid, i am just pointing out that not only there are no incentives what so ever the cars are more expensive.

UN needs to drop the hammer ASAP. Hard limit 1 car per family, ceiling in the emissions (aka no less than Euro 5 and incentives for Euro 6), hard limit in household power consumption, full ban on aerosols etc etc

Planet is dying and we just stand there with our "scrotums" in our hands doing nothing.

Like the Civil Rights movement, it's one of those things that can't wait until everyone catches up, we have to organize and vote and of course force the issue and change NOW.

Yes people are going to be angry, they are going to have stupid and ignorant emotional arguments for why we need to destroy our planet so a few loggers from a dying industry, don't feel bad about having to learn and train for a new job.

But hey, if we are to get serious, people are going to stop expecting everybody is always going to go along.

They will have to give up more if the objective is to save humanity on Earth. I would also not put China on the poor country list. That victim card has left thier wallet. Europe and the US are doing thier parts. Numbers might be going down to slow for your taste but they are going down. China on the other hand has the numbers exploding upward when they are already the biggest. India will get their soon too.

Need to get over hating on people with boarders and realize this is a world wide human issue. It is one total number of carbon. How do you reduce it the most? By going after the middle men with falling numbers or going after the big boys with exploding upward numbers. Its just pretty obvious. Sure Europe and the US can do more. But at least they are trending in the right direction. China is not. India is not. If Africa ever gets its shit together it won't. Not as long as we play blame the middle man doing something while the problems get to grow because it can be spun into hate for the US or Europe.

That type of thinking will get us dead.
