Um, why is this under a WoW General Discussion forum?
Up six figures lifetime and since I rarely bet more than $100 or so it is very unlikely I'll ever lose it all back.
You do lose but it was extremely rare for me to be down at the end of a month when I was doing it seriously.
Trick is to only to bet into promotional offerings or other situations where the true odds are less than the payout. If you can get three to one where the true odds are two to one consistently you will make money. And also bet within your capital to avoid a long unlucky streak wiping you out.
I think what you mean is: why do compulsive gamblers gamble compulsively? I always found that question tedious: obviously because they have psychological problems and/or are financially desperate. Waste of time discussing it because the problem lies outside the conscious mind and can't be solved by rational discourse.
My grandmother plays slots every Thursday and profits all the time. She's super lucky. She's also won a lot off scratch offs, including 25K twice.
All I've ever done is two $1 scratch-offs. On the first I won $1 and broke even. On the second I won $40 and called it a day.
i won my own pet draenei.
r.i.p. alleria. 1997-2017. blizzard ruined alleria forever. blizz assassinated alleria's character and appearance.
i will never forgive you for this blizzard.
I play the lotto and the Powerball if the line is short to buy the tickets and have cash on me because I always feel like it is my destiny to win it heh heh. I don't like any other gambling. I don't play cards or ever go to casinos. I have the most terrible luck there is when it comes to gambling. I went to a casino once and I felt like it was the most boring thing in the world.
My husband's luck is similar, he never wins anything. I would say he has probably spent $300 on gambling and never won more than a dollar or two. He bought me a bunch of scratches for Christmas (each one wrapped separately for troll effect) and before even attempting to play them I thanked him for the worthless paper. He probably spent like $40 and I won $1.
The general rule in our household is he isn't allowed to gamble.
For entertainment. I do not gamble what I can not afford.
How about dont tell other people what to do with their money?
It's an enjoyable experience as long as you stick to the money you say you're going to gamble with and not go over it.
The first time my wife went to a casino she hit a Major Jackpot of about $1500 on an 80 cent slot bet. That $1500 was put aside and we used the rest of the $100 or so we had assigned for gambling and then cashed out. A great steak dinner was bought with some of the winnings.

It's entertainment. People spend money on having fun. Some people do that by drinking, some by playing video games, some by gambling. As long as you're in control of how much you spend, it's perfectly fine.
Analysing the compulsion to gamble is a very complicated topic. Some might think they are one game closer to winning it big, others have financial issues they want to escape with a big win, others love the feeling/rush of correctly guessing the outcome in a game of chance, others are actually addicted and the behaviour is automatic without thinking what they are doing. It's a horrible industry that has destroyed many lives. I used to play roulette at the casino and have had 3 big wins ($3000+) but overall have lost more than I won I'd say. Currently I only play the lottery and limit the amount I spend. What keeps me playing? Dreaming of winning the jackpot and having a millionaire's lifestyle where not only can I do fun things but also help family/friends in need as well as strangers. It's nice to dream life could be different to how it is now.
If one is spending money to try and make money, that is a lose lose situation. Why because, when the ROI is less than 100% it still is a lose lose. I have 100$ but, it costs me time, and the ROI of gambling is something 3% of a chance to win. And, of that 3% chance to win, it's even less chance to actually win your value of initial investment. Therefore lose, lose. I never understood gambling really. From a math perspective, it's a tax and dumb people.
Agreed, I just don't get it. Losing HUGE sums of money. Hell, 10 years ago when I was married my ex wife and I went to a casino in San Diego. They had this real high value slot at the door. Something like 3.5 million dollars if you win from just putting in 1, 5, 10, 20, or 50$ bill. Me being up to a slight thrill upon walking in the door thought, "Sure what the hell". Put 1$ in, and....... I didn't win. Then after walking around for a little while found another interesting slot machine, typical like 1$ machine. I put in my 1$ and instantly won 25$ in nickles, which was pretty cool. Though I then turned around and Spent 20$ of that on the same machine, "like a dummy" and lost the 20$. I called it quits and never gambled since. I did make 3$ on the whole time in the casino, 1$ at the door and 1$ at the later slot machine.
I'm just not enchanted by gambling or the thrill of losing money for something I know will usually net a loss. Doesn't make sense. Was a fun time for the 30 mins we were there though.
I think it's because, we initially went there for food buffet. Since it was like 20$ all you can eat and had some REALLY good looking food. Problem was, we decided not to get food because, there was like 300 people in line and I hate waiting more than 10 mins for anything. Decided to go to subway, which was great.
I only play Eurojackpot because winning it would drastically change my life, and the 20 Euro per month don't hurt me in the slightest.
Normal gambling, like in casinos, is a sure way to lose money.
It's incredibly simple for people who are not idiots. Gambling is entertainment where it's possible to get your money back. Just many people go out of their budget.
Last time I was in Vegas I played Pai Gow for 6 hours on $60. That's some damn cheap entertainment. The time before that I was up $180 over 4 hours. Overall I have probably lost around $2000. But that's for possibly hundreds of hours of entertainment.
