Because you're lonely and desperate, and creators of the apps know their demographic: the lonley and desperate. So of course they are gonna click bait you as much as possible.
And no, I don't use dating apps as I am perfectly capable and able of actually talking to fellow human beings of the opposite sex in real life.
Also, stop posting these pitiful "I suck at dating" threads you do. Literally every one you've ever done ends up the same with how people respond. What makes you think this one wil be any different? Honestly, have some self respect and stop posting your dating woes on this website to be scrutinized.
Here is some genuine advice: don't try so hard to meet people, especially on social media. In all honesty being calm, being yourself, and having a level of "not giving a fuck" goes a long way. Trying to hard will end up forcing to act as somebody you're not.
Like how you're trying hard at posting this shit? Stop doing that.

What Winter Blossom said, although I am guessing it depends on which services you use, if it's like dating websites, my experience is you pay for what you get. I liked E-Harmony because women and men paid to use the service so people who actually paid a premium and wanted a good service to meet actual candidates with was swell.
However if it was generally hookup BS, yeah there would likely be all types of shenanigans.

why the hell do you have notifications on
It is all about engagement for any of the social apps (dating or otherwise). Facebook and Twitter pull this too. Engagement means increased activities which means more people signing up for subscriptions and watching ads, and more data that they are sucking up to be sold to other companies.
Always (and I mean always) keep in mind that corporations don't care about you. Ever. They care about maximizing profits for their shareholders (or private owners) first and foremost. They only care about individuals only in regard to potentially losing lots of them...hence, they will respond to large movements, but will ignore individual issues.
Once you understand this, what corporations do (and don't do) becomes far more understandable.
Because they want your money.
I'm surprised that there aren't any messages. Women tend to be bombarded with them on these apps.
To get you to come to a forum and ask stupid questions.
Maybe it's to get you onto the app. So the online user base looks far more active and attractive to new comers
