Thank you for the information and the links. Here are two sentences that really stood out:
The per capita income of the bottom quintile of Chileans is less than $140 a month. Half the population earns about $550.
My first impression is that the President severely underestimated the mood of the people thinking that calling the protestors evil and killing a few protestors would work. What seemed to happen instead is that it made the situation much worse. Then he made some changes to the economics of Chile which I find interesting - he can single handedly just make these kinds of changes? Or did the Chilean version of Parliament or Congress pass a bunch of laws very quickly? But it seems that the people of Chile have essentially said "not enough".
I'll be looking for more articles about Chile. Thanks for the heads up about this. And my condolences for what you are going through. It does not seem fun at all. And being the target of tear gas also does not sound fun either
Take care. Good luck.
Anyone catch the Trump judicial nominee who was crying on stage again after the ABA gave him one of the harshest reviews the senators had seen?
The strongly worded review drew equally strong reactions at a Wednesday hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee — from Democrats who called the ABA findings unusual and troubling as well as from Republicans who called it a low attack from a group they’ve long accused of bias against conservatives. But one charge was particularly upsetting to VanDyke himself: The ABA’s report that he “would not say affirmatively that he would be fair to any litigant before him, notably members of the LGBTQ community.”
Asked if that was correct, the nominee struggled almost 15 seconds to find his words.
He started to cry.
“I did not say that,” he said in a shaky voice. He apologized to his listeners as he halted again, apparently too overcome to speak.

Maybe I don't get it, they aren't accusing him of saying something. They're accusing him of not saying something.
Not as juicy as the monster trying to blame democratic senators because he wanted to murder sick children, so I can see how it was overlooked.
Not going to happen. The district voted for Obama in 2012, Brown in 2014, Clinton in 2016 and Newsom in 2018. Steve Knight lasted till 2018 because he was legacy Republican. He has been the rep for so long that people just kept checking his name each election. Once GOP lose a district like that, there is no getting it back. That's why Issa is not running in his old district. Instead he is going after Hunter's district.
I checked out the English version of the reddit forum, and started to do Spanish to English translations of the Spanish version.
If I were to compare this to America, it would be like if the standard of living for Americans got worse, and then the Trump supporters and the anti-Trump people merged together as one big group to protest the President in power. The goals of the protesters seem pretty clear: more money for the working class and poor (or lower prices for them which is kind of the same thing).
Chile seems to have the exact same media issues that the US has. No one believes any of the mainstream media. And the protestors are working on ways to report what is happening and finding ways of getting these reports to the outside world.
A big similarity between Chile and the US is the following: before Pinera, there was a "socialist" government that didn't do anything socialist at all. It seems that the "socialist" government was just a continuation of the right wing government before that, and that Pinera is just a continuation of the "socialist" government that preceded it. Kind of like how Obama continued a lot of Bush's policies on foreign policy, and as much as Trump tries to be the anti-Obama, the Trump economy is basically the Obama economy with a few adjustments that Trump has made (the tax cut and the tariffs).
I find the Chile protests quite interesting, and I can see these protests spreading to other countries. Chile is not the only country with huge income inequality issues. I hope that these protests stay fairly violence free, and also that structural changes are made to the economy benefitting working class and poor people, and even middle class Chileans as well if there are any of those.
Where does the Chilean middle class stand on all of this? Is there a Chilean middle class?

More info: The Agriculture Department projects that farm incomes will reach $88 billion in 2019 but nearly 40% of that — $33 billion — will come from trade aid, disaster assistance, the farm bill and insurance indemnities.
That's right: forty percent of US farming income wasn't from farming. It was from being bailed out, one way or another, by the federal government.
In theory knowing the name of the dog may clue somebody in to who the handler is. Knowing who the handler is tells you the unit and the probable location of it. So it seems odd but it does have some logic.

There is nothing hard core rural republicans like more than some good old fashion socialism as long as it does not go to brown folk.
Trump says new location for the signing of Phase One coming soon.
So here's a question for the rabid fanbase: why not just sign it, right now? This is supposed to be the biggest help for farmers since Einstein invented seeds or something, right? So if it's so bigly and yuge, why not sign it, right now? Just pick up a Sharpie, and sign it. Who cares about a meeting or photo op? If it's for the good of the country, why delay until you can find a venue?

Fitting for this administration.
I believe this is not the first judicial nominee not endorsed by the ABA? I believe multiple?
Yes this show they want ideologues, who care more about right wing agenda. Since I'm a Woke Independent, both are putting up nominees for their ideas. Yet Trump is next level.
Democrats are the best! I will never ever question a Democrat again. I LOVE the Democrats!
