Probably not, size only wins if you also have similar innovation per capita. Which if China has that then they deserve to be the new superpower. But there are serious cultural and structural reasons as to why innovation is difficult in China, largely because the populace isn't allowed to implement new ideas that differ from CCP policy.

Absolutely, it should be the #1 priority of the next US president to work with the EU and cut china back down to a sub 10 trillion GDP economy. It is the single greatest danger to democracy and freedom across the world and its power must be curbed. If your people are not free, you don't get money and you don't get to wield power.

Nah, it doesn't require sanctions from the government, just stop dealing with them. Don't use tariffs, just shame the shit out of them, and anyone who does business with them.

A treaty between the UK and China. One that Hong Kong had no choice in.

Its called strapping someone to a chair and slapping aside the head until they say what you want them to.

Then you point at their friends and say, "Do you want some of this?"

There you have it, the greatest education system in the world.

China will topple the US because the US has a deeply fractured culture between left and right. The US is politically destabilizing. If you don't believe THAT, just look at who the US elected in 2016. China, in comparison, is a unified culture. The US is gonna fade as world superpower pretty fast at this point. The ONLY way it does not is if the democrats and republicans can come together and find common ground. If you can show me republicans praising Obama and democrats praising Trump, I will believe the US culture is strong enough to beat China.

Its too late for that. The culture in Europe and the US is shattered. You will NEVER get enough social cohesion to bring about strong enough sanctions to rein in China. In fact, this is gonna go the other way. Pretty soon, China/Russia is gonna start slapping sanctions on the west to get them to do what they want.

Precisely. It’s clear that Trump neither knows nor cares enough about the situation to do anything with long term effect. Another reason on top of a large pile that him being president for another four years would be dangerous not only for the US but the world as a whole.

Here’s hoping his successor is much more forward thinking and stringent on the matter.

Well you can't predict the future but there is strengths and weaknesses to both the homogenous and the diverse culture(China vs US). I think it has to be the case that the diverse culture will win in the long-term, so long as all the conflicting ideologies don't cause an increase in physical violence/crime. As long as the 'fracturing', as you call it, is purely about ideas then it is actually a strength because countries only improve via disagreement and never by everybody agreeing with each other(AKA circle jerk).

Hong Kong has been effectively a separate country to China up until now.

And there are several forces on Earth that could stop that if they decided to. You guys really vastly overestimate China's military power.

    Nah, that is the US.

Trump and Xi would be the best of friends under different circumstances.

Hong Kong has always been Chinese.
Chinese != CCP-chinese. The sino-british join declaration promised this and that for at least 50 years, but ccp is doing what ccp does. Which is "this is china's internal matter, foreign countries fuck off" while shoving it in hongkongers. Can't blame anyone taking it to the streets if you suddenly realize your once worthy passport is slowly decomposing into a mainland chinese one, can you?

Oh, i'm not saying they should not protest. But even with different systems, they are part of the Chinese country.

Nowadays yeah, just got caught in the "has always been Chinese." So apologies on that, and agree with you in the obvious, they are part of communist china now, which means game over for those who don't fancy ccp.

The same "re-education" they're doing to the uyghurs? Kidnapping, camps, brainwashing, the whole deal?
