So why is OW2 being pitched as a sequel?

-Backwards compatibility / crossplay with Overwatch 1
-Progress carried over from Overwatch 1
-Only major features are a new game mode and some new customization options and a few new heroes

This sounds more like an expansion pack than a sequel.

Fake hype for an originally overhyped bad game whose 15 seconds of fame are over.

It's not even crossplay with Overwatch 1, they both will use the same client.

They overhyped PvE co-op mode as a whole separate game basically. Normally it would just be $30 DLC.

    So they can charge more

even the game mode will be in overwatch 1, basically EVERYTHIGN is the same, all future heroes and maps will still come to both ow1 and 2, the onyl difference are pve missions. if u ask me it was a mistake calling it overwatch 2, it causes a lot of confusion and dissapointment. the only saving grace id say is that i assume that future missions and pve shit will come free to ow2 like how maps and heroes are free to ow1

Guess you missed the whole: "We are redefining what a sequel can be..." speech. In short, you do not need OW to play OW2... it's a stand alone game. You are correct in thinking it's an expansion pack... however, it introduces new content which is backwards compatible only because they are upgrading the original OW to 2.0 for free. The only things you are locked out of is the new PvE maps, Story missions, and PvE upgradable Ultimates (which only work in PvE).

They decided to rebrand it for some reason instead of selling it as an expansion.

hmm here is the reason lol.You are right.

I mean, this is pretty much exactly the definition of an expansion pack. What you described is literally the same way that WoW expacs work. Just because Blizzard is calling it a sequel doesn't mean it is.

Except you need to by the base game and the last expansion... in this case you don't... the base/ stand alone game is included. Think more WarChest not expansion pack.

You did not play wow long time, yeah? Quite some ago, you do not need base game, only sub and if you want you can buy last expansion pack. All other packs are included in sub

    Because shareholders.

I wouldn't call it an expansion, more like an extra large patch. It's a pretty dumb rebranding effort they are doing just to squeeze some money out of everyone, I'm surprised more people aren't calling it out.

Money probably, I guess because it is running on an updated Overwatch engine they can pitch it as a sequel, as to why they didn't just do the change as a massive overhaul to Overwatch, again probably comes down to Activision-Blizzard being a company whose sole purpose is the sweet dollar bills ( as most companies are )

So that Overwatch1 may live. It's been out for over 3.5 years and players can still perfectly play without spending a penny.

And because of this they sell overwatch 2. More money, since lootboxes are probably no longer be the main income (and even more some countries are now even disallowing them at all)

Because after tonnes of free shit over the years after only buying the OW box, Blizz want some dollar for all that content they're giving you.

Overwatch turning into Call of Duty...buy overwatch 3 in 4 years and get 15 new heroes xD

I love how Blizzard is going out of the way to make it so Overwatch 2 has backwards compability, that people don't lose stuff going from 1-2 and people still can play the first one without buying the 2nd one, yet people complain.

Most gaming companies wouldn't do this, they would just release a new game and abandon Overwatch 1 completely. Blizzard isn't yet that is a bad thing? Wut???

The reason why is likely to avoid the WoW expansion model. The way it used to work back with when WoW had only 1 or two expansions you had to buy all of them to get all the content. Now a days the base game includes multiple expansions but OW isn’t old enough to do that.

By using the 2 name instead, any idea of having to buy multiple expansions is gone. GOTY editions is probably the best analogy. Anybody who never wants to touch PvE won’t ever have to pay, at least not until the next engine upgrade probably.
