    in an ideal world: everything

feasably: it depends on where you study

some basics should be universal, like prehistoric times, evolution, etc. but
then focus on your local history, but try to include as much of other locations as possible
some big historic events (ww1, ww2, cold war) should also be universal but with a focus on your local involvement
then mostly region specific stuff (french revolution, 100 year war, 30 year war, etc for a eurocentric view)
the closer you come to the present the more unsure i get about whats important ...

As much as possible. Those who forget the mistakes of history, are doomed to repeat them.
" If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher.." - Abraham Lincoln
The Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to - prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms..” - Samuel Adams

You are assuming here that that is not how history is already being taught.

The history we learn in the west is incredibly Euro centric. And we usually only superficially cover colonialism or pre-colonial history.

How much time is spent in the western cannon on Confucian or pre Confucian China? It's not that we don't know what happened, because the Chinese kept perfectly detailed records and there is enough archeological evidence to fill a 1000 Museums.

How much time do we spend on the history of Aksum which was contemporaneous with Ptolomeic Egypt and Imperial Rome and was incredibly important for both.

Fact is, the Opium Wars and European Colonialism in China was incredibly devastating. It would be the modern equivalent of Mexican drug cartels defeating the US government in open warfare, taking control of all major coastal cities and dismantling much the US justice system, military and civil service, as well as nearly all manufacturing and heavy industry.

The Chinese call this period the Century of Humiliation, and for good reason, it literally scarred the national psyche for probably all time to come.
