If there was Transmog in Retail.. would Retail still be alive?

Ummm... No idea how you could forget it is in-game given people in your actual raid groups and wandering around in end-game territories look any way they want to. Bizarrely out of touch with your surroundings, mate.

The "in classic you looked like a clown" thing has to stop. It was simply not true.
Back in the day you had a tier set you wore for months. No alternatives. So at a certain point you would look good as long as you play the game PvE or PvP. There have been very few exceptions where not set pieces have been better (druid, some robes) but the normal player normally would take the set piece.

Now you have many sources of loot and MANY distinct looking sets. Just imagine getting the shoulders from a dungeon the the head from Palace... both are good but don't go well together and to top it of the chest piece from a warfront. You would look like a clown.
Transmog gave Blizz the opportunity to make relevant different looking armor pieces without facing a backlash from the players looking like Lady Gaga on steroids

Without xmog, I'd have quit BfA long before I actually did it. Cloth gear this xpac is !@#$ing ugly, with very few exceptions (HC Uldir set)... And plate (after all I've played all three plate classes) isn't much better :/

And as far as the "omg vanilla u looked liek a clownz" meme goes, most of my favourite xmogs come from Vanilla and BC, with Legion in the third place.

Which is exactly the point OP is making. BfA does not stand up on it's gameplay. It still has players largely because of Transmog and Mount farming.

Collecting is gameplay. If it's in the game it's gameplay, unless there's some other definition we're using now.

Collecting items for transmog (as well as mounts and pets) are most of what I do in the game. So for me, it's the major reason why I play it. Also why I'd like player housing, so it would give even more things to collect and things to create.

Nobody cares about transmog? I spent four years just to get a mount to go with my transmog hun. and just about everyone you see in retail will have their gear transmogged.

I'm really curious what your xmog set looks like and what mount you're using. My xmog on my priest is various pieces I put together that looks good. I use my Anathema
when I have a staff but when I have a mace/dagger it change things up often. For mounts, I use my Big Love Rocket just because its the rarest mount I own and one that's really rare for the playerbase too.
