There is nothing challenging in kingdoms of amalur. One of the easiest games I have ever seen.
Could you though? Even some of the hardest bosses in WoW would be pretty easy if 24 out of 25 people in your group were AI that didn't make mistakes as that greatly reduces the margin for error. I can't think of any tab-target game that is actually challenging for a single player.
The Xenoblade series has combat kind of similar to WoW.
Such game would be boring as hell.
I would say try dark souls 3 if you want a challenging game.
Those are about as similar to wow as DmC is. With OPs criterion it all flies.

Clearly not in yours. It's about as broad a genre as they get, only needing a character you can remotely identify with and inhabiting a toss up of a world that could be pulled from anywhere.
If you knew the candle was fire then the meal was cooked a long time ago.
If you don't mind sidescrolling games like Castlevania, I'd highly recommend Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir. Bloodstained has more of the grind and item hunting (one character, plenty of weapon types and armor to collect, but the collection is fixed so there is no RNG in the stats of equipment). Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir has almost no equipment and plenty of difficulty if you want (4 difficulty settings).
The only other thing I can think of is playing WoW solo and focusing on high-difficulty tasks like soloing current content the way that Mione did (if you're unfamiliar with them, here is a fairly lengthy article about them https://www.icy-veins.com/forums/top...e-solo-artist/).
If you don't mind not having magic or fantasy stuff then i can suggest Kingdom Come Deliverance too.
Guild Wars 1
Dragon's Dogma, kind of.
