I'll be repeating all my yet unsolved ones:

Teen tries to escape her helicopter mom who planned this all along.

Crew of a ship sacrifice themselves to switch the light on.

Heart-gripping drama about a woman trying to escape her everyday life between her terminally ill mother and her seemingly perfect boyfriend by starting an affair with his best friend.

And a new one for good measure:

Police try to get to the bottom of a crime but the true culprit is closer than they expect until it is too late.

    You are correct.

P.s. The last one in my previous post has a spiritual predecessor. Guessing one will probably make the other trivial, but okay. Let's see if anyone gets it without Wikipedia.
Several people discuss a crime while seeking shelter from the rain.

    sunshine

I was thinking usual suspects but I'm not sure it has a spiritual predecessor?

no, sorry, though nice guess hint that may or may not help. no one likes slipper socks as Christmas gift.

Two stranded men drink kerosene until one of them falls from a lighthouse after taking his new dog for a walk

    Not a movie but

A cripple and an Italian with balls made of steel race cross-country on horseback to collect the body parts of Jesus in order to defeat the president of the United States.

Both Sunshine and The Usual Suspects are correct.
The spiritual predecessor is an old movie Bryan Singer mentioned as one of his inspirations.

edit: Can't believe the "heart-gripping drama" is still unsolved. Hint: The general consensus might disagree on the genre I've stated but most of the crew (at least the writer, director, producer, executive producer and lead actor) definitely agreed at the time.

Besides the movie being kinda old already part of the problem might have been that your descriptions were hinting at a drama or action movie. ^^'
I only know I've heard of the movie but I'm unsure if I've ever seen it.
right, part of the fun is writing a brief description without context. everything I wrote it true, and there is action in it!
