Brazil leader touted by right as free speech hero. aims to jail critical journalist

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/21/o...ld-brazil.html

greenwald is the guy who gave the US the snowden and assange leaks,

i dont personally like all of his works, but the fact remains is the right who lauded about how bolsonaro is owning the "SJWs" and bringing back free speech is now attempting to jail a man who calls out corruption and when governments do war crimes, should atleast make them somewhat reconsider how good their guy is, but alas i doubt it

Free speech for people you like and brutal suppression of people you don't like? Sounds like the right wing ideal.

Inb4 someone comes out with "but what about LIBERALS saying mean things on TUMBLR!" or "what about LEFT-LEANING PRIVATE COMPANIES choosing not to host NAZI CONTENT on their websites?" whilst ignoring actual right-wing government legislation aimed at actual free speech restrictions.

Like, oh, say, Trump, and his desire to make it easier to sue the press.

Conservatives should never govern in any country. Look at the shitshow the US is in now. Conservatism will always lead to suppression, corruption, and disregard for democratic ideals.

Outrageous. PT and the other left of center parties need to advocate for and implement much stronger free speech protections in Brazil.

I believe they can do it if they try hard enough.

With that statement, it sounds like you support what other Korea does to dissenters.

If someone hacked into leaders phones here to publish information found, they'd be in a lot of trouble.

If only that where true, that would be amazing.

Instead the charges are brought on by people who want Brazil to be ruled by a military junta again.

    Non-violent speech can't destabilize anything.

Legal experts and opposition politicians said the evidence was thin. An investigation by the federal police, which identified and arrested the hacker, had already cleared Mr. Greenwald, and a Supreme Court justice had declared that publishing the messages was protected under the Brazilian Constitution.
The problem being that the allegations of his wrongdoing by the government are bullshit. Everything he did was legal.

This isn't a "News of the World" situation where he was hacking into cell phones.

But how can you destabilize Brazil without violence? As long as they uphold an ethic of free speech and non-violence then the country will be stable.

Violence can come from non-violent speech. Surprising, I know.

But how can non-violent speech cause violence? It can't.

What you're saying doesn't make any sense.

Theres a thing here called "rule of the law". You know, he committed crimes and and a republic attorney charged him with those crimes (it was not the president). Thats not because he's a journalist hes allowed to do anything here and get away with crimes.

He is basically behind hackers who invaded the privacy of government members. Thats not journalism, thats a crime against national security.
