you can buy lockboxes from AH, it counts as lootboxes. "Rewards" are shit tho, so it kinda balanced.

Also, it's not like you can just "add" lootboxes to a game, you have to design your game around it, and with MMO it'll be VERY noticeable change which will draw out many players from the game

Why would they introduce a Free 2 Play mechanic in a subscription based game?

There is def a potensial for loot boxes in wow.

Personally I dislike them alot. Then again, I have played lots of games with it without ever spending money on it.

Paid loot boxes that affect end game player power would be something that would make me instantly quit.

I always liked the shop especially since most things in there are finite and easily achievable via ingame gold thanks to the WoW-token, over wod to now i got everything in there for "free".

This is also the only reason the shop is bearable for me since i simply see it as something you can get with a varying amount of gold, WoW is a paid subscription game charging you for another 50~ bucks every 2 years, it would simply suck if it would also greed with mtx.

So if i would find lootboxes in there i would have to quit WoW because i don't want to support that kind of greed, regardless of what would be in them.

This is also why i never understood the hate train in that regards, compared to other games especially f2p ones nowadays WoW is practically not that greedy, to get everything and fulfill your inner completionist games like League, dota, Wot etc. are waaaay more expensive.

Any amount of power or a lot of power? I can imagine being able to buy a 'mythic raider starter kit' would make you quit but what about say a benthic armor set?

Dont forget alot of people collect gear from raids/dungeons/pvp cause they like the way they look. For many its more about the stats. To get these items you would have to play the game, no matter.

To put cosmetics(gear++) in the shop would mean that alot of people dont really need to play the game anymore. Just pay up while standing in SW. Overall its not healthy for a game.

They already do this by continually adding really cool mounts and pets to the store but not as many / unique ones to earn in-game.

Honestly I wouldn't stop playing if they went the route of Overwatch. More cosmetics by just playing would be fine by me - but I'd be concerned if they added in lootboxes and took away more things I can earn in-game just to sell more RMT cosmetics.

Yes, store mounts are a thing. You can pay for that thing.
With loot boxes you are paying for a chance of getting that thing. If I wanted to do some gambling, i'd hit the casino

Fair enough, but it's still a paywall regardless of which route you take.

Paid lootboxes are a HUGE cancer in the game industry that needs to be removed.

Not everyone plays the game just for loot.
This. I play the game to make my characters look good and that feeling of accomplishment, not to only become strong to beat some numbers game.
If all the cool stuff can only be acquired through cash and lootboxes my whole reason to play is gone.

So...another reason why I don't really see this happening too soon. Actually I sooner see this happening as part of the x-pac CE.....

I just had a look again at the shop - and..yeah...I give you a point here that they are "unique"...but "really cool"? I actually find some of our class mounts from Legion much cooler (and also unique). I like the rat and fox from Legion (?) a lot more...shame they can't fly (nah..not really a shame) - and for the longest time a truly helpful mount (waterstrider) was only available in game.

The Junkyard Drifter and the Crab mount from Naz are awesome....so...I would dispute that the truly unique and cool mounts are mostly in the shop - but ofc that also is down to taste.
Indeed those helms failed back then. It not only failed cause of the outrage on forums, bit it also sold bad. They also looked very bad. If they had done something like this today, it would probably be complete sets with various themes. Quick example is overwatch; Whenever a holiday season comes or a big event(olympics,World cup) they release skins/outfits.

Why not do this in wow when easter/xmas is coming?

    It depends really.
if the loot boxes would give pieces of raid quality gear, then i'd drop WoW in a heartbeat and go play another game.
if the loot boxes would give stuff that doesn't really matter, like cosmetics, then i'd just ignore them.

See this whole argument is silly, it boils to "We dont want for you to hopping from realm to realm, break communities, and be a nuisance... That is unless you have cash of course "
