In my opinion WoD suffered 2 major problems:
- Unfinished launch
- Content draught
If WoD had shipped in the 6.1 state, with 6.2 lasting only 6 months before a 6.3 Farahlon came along, then it would've been a good expansion.
Some comparisons:
- Lore: Despite the time-traveling plot holes in WoD, those storylines were far better than those in BFA; it was actually a pleasure completing each zone for the first time.
- Features: WoD also brought some innovative systems and features at the time (Garrisons, new character models, new quest system), while BFA feels like a recycled Legion. Allied races are a plus for BFA, but they feel very buggy when compared to core races (less customization options, less animations, less polish).
- Alts: WoD was slightly more alt-friendly than BFA; while the leveling process was more strict, WoD did not force you into so much grind at max level before having a viable character for running your preferred content.
BFA had some good ideas, but the delivery was off and ultimately overshadowed by its cons.
