Since a lot of countries are unable or unwilling to do much to flatten the curve; Plan B: Herd Immunity will be the solution whether we like it or not. This isn't meant to scare people, but honestly I do not see any other solution until we get massed produced cures/vaccines. So if you have major health problems/old you will just have to self isolate for a year or longer until a vaccine arrives at your doorstep.

Flattening the curve and herd immunity are both part of the same strategy; it's just that people perceive them differently.

Or what did you think would cause the curve to decrease after the peak - while still getting about the same number of cases overall?

The alternative that China and S. Korea managed, at least temporarily, was to stop it completely. But the question is whether that will continue to work during the next 12 months (or at least during the coming autumn/winter - if it actually decreases during the summer).

I still think it sends the wrong message to think that is only a risk factor if you are old or sick. Which is how a lot of people will read this kind of reporting and act accordingly. It would not surprise me this was the thinking of many in Italy when looking at China, that their were also difference that would make their situation better suited to deal with this virus.

Italians are also in general less likely to follow government health instructions according to some survey (done before this).

Well no not fully, but your government is giving mixed signals, at one hand i acknowledge the steps being taken and asking people to stay home, offering aid to companies to close their doors and so forth on the other hand you have Rutte talking about herd immunity. I just find that the idea that you can control who gets this virus and hope on herd immunity the wrong way to go about it.

So what's the actual government plan now, are you guys going to close down stores, restaurants and so on or not?

Restaurants are already closed, stores are not but a bunch of bigs chains have decided to close on their own because no one in shopping anyway.

Like pretty much everyone else schools are closed, restaurants are closed, public gatherings banned, companies heavily encouraged to send people home to work. Last Monday when the measures went in effect the train company saw an 85% drop in travel.

But even with these measures people are going to get sick and its going to last a while. Eventually (many months from now) a sort of herd immunity will form naturally, remember WHO estimates that even with restrictions and quarantines were looking at ~70% of populations getting infected tho most will have no to mild symptoms.

Rutte's comment was badly chosen and misinterpreted by a lot of people. The country is by no means waiting for herd immunity to sort itself out.

New York is blowing up right now. They went from 700 cases to over 3000 cases in, what, two days? They're reporting 20% hospitalization.

Same as happened everyone else. Once it gets going to goes fast. Which is why so many countries took measures while they appeared to be 'fine'. Because waiting until it blows up means your 2 weeks to late.

Glad to hear, just one other thing there is right now no actually solid basis to believe you'll be more immune for it the next time it comes around, that is sadly still wishful thinking at this point.

Just a bit of info for you all to ponder. My son and his fiance went to Ireland (I know stupid) on Friday. They had a lay over in Paris and that night France was put at the top of the list of "don't go here" countries. Okay so they make it to Dublin and then go to some town northeast of there. They thought they were coming back this coming Saturday...wrong...the airline called them and said they were coming back last night. So they board the plane in Dublin...full capacity, full flight crew...and are told "When we land at JFK airport don't move, the cdc is going to come in and screen all of us." All well and good. Sure enough, they land, stay out on the tarmac and the cdc comes to them in their hazmat suits. Cdc doesn't ask one question, just takes everyones temperature and says "Carry on" and lets them all off. WTF? Seriously...that's a screening? So this shit is never going to stop unless we close all borders to every other country in the world until it's controlled. I know how this happened as he was messaging me as the whole thing unfolded...unbelievable. But he did call management of where he works and he was told self quarantine for 2 weeks...paid. C'mon Cdc.

That more seems like a show than anything real.

Temperature measurements are not a reliable indicator (during incubation period, or if you have taken drugs to reduce the fever, etc). Even just giving them a pamphlet on what to do in case of symptoms might be better on its own (yes, that actually works); and I would assume that asking them about the same things would give more weight to that message.

folks are going to get an education on exactly how much data govt can extrapolate just from where your cell phone is in relation to other cell phones.

This is one of these times when I'm glad they can do this.

Our unwashed masses were still thinking that being asked to self-quarantine was some joke or friendly advice, as opposed to "fucking stay at home for 14 days, because you were around confirmed patient, you moron". So hopefully them getting SMS and order and knowing they can be tracked will put a chill on their irresponsible behaviour.


Whatever is needed to try and reduce new cases down the road and hopefully get some sort of normalcy after couple of months. "Muh freedumbz" can take a chill pill for next couple of months.

This year is fucked, I'm just glad we have entered it economically strong and prepared, so at least it won't be a complete wtf trainwreck shitshow,,, just a shitshow. Unemployment is projected to spike from 4% to mid-high teens.

Government says they will cover people losing jobs/being sent on unpaid leave using relaxed Social Security procedures and they won't require usual bureaucracy steps - as in employers can report their employees being sent on unpaid leave/fired and employee will automatically get unemployment benefits without even having to report or without having to register/appear in the employment agency. The gap is that self-employed freelancers and such seem to not have solution yet, so these guys will get fucked hard unless Social Security conjures some solution there.



In other news, no new measures today. Government is assessing whether to go full lockdown, not yet official, but there noise already - indications and some leaks, so there must be real talks about doing it soon.

Ministry of Defense is going to make use of military budget to import/procure/smuggle medical equipment per request of Ministry of Health using their connections and various sources, bypassing the usual bureaucracy and shit.

True, but in that case the world is likely fucked anyway.

A Vaccine is 1-1.5 years out. You can't maintain a full on quarantine of the entire world for that long. So the #1 priority is to keep healthcare from being overwhelmed, and then #2 keep society slowly trundling along where possible because we are in this for the long haul. Wait it out, everything will be fine next month is a pipedream.
Its taken China 3 months to slowly being to start some things back up and you have to hope they don't see another flare up in 2-3 weeks time.
