U.S. indicts Venezuela President Maduro on drug trafficking charges

It's a highly unusual indictment of a head of state that comes 14 months after the U.S. recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's president. Maduro remains in power, even as the U.S. has insisted he step down and said all options were on the table if he did not.

The Trump administration has stepped up its sanctions — more will be announced Thursday, per NBC News — but not managed to topple Maduro.

The State Department is offering $15 million for information that could lead to Maduro's capture.

Venezuela is in the midst of one of the world's worst economic crises and millions have fled the country, overwhelming Colombia and other countries in the region.

The Trump administration has worked to block the regime's revenue streams, which include oil, gold and drugs.

The Venezuelan opposition is demanding democratic elections (Maduro rigged the last presidential vote), but has limited leverage.

Even some of Maduro's critics concede a compromise will be needed to break this damaging deadlock. The Trump administration's position remains that Maduro must go.

Ordering the arrest and putting an Old West-style bounty on the leader of another country happens very rarely, even when it is warranted. (get it?)

It's particularly hilarious to me because the check people are going to get is far from unprecedented. The US did it in 2008 and 2001. It's economic stimulus / emergency action, not proto-UBI. It's not from the desk of Andrew Yang. But we live in a stupid timeline filled with stupid people who will make up bullshit to feel right.

Kind of similar to how Coronavirus exposes the US's lack of per-capita hospital beds, medical facilities, doctors and emergency preparedness compared to other Western countries. But that's a distinctly different thing than single payer, which has nothing to do with Coronavirus response at all and having it would not have built more hospitals, trained more doctors or bought more beds. Government-run health care isn't saving Italy or Spain. How to pay for healthcare and what we buy for healthcare are two separate problems in this case. Not that the ideologues care.
