Might help if instead of useless projects you get old removed transmog skins as a reward from it maybe a few of the limited mounts?
They should probably include teir sets as part of archaeology since they become Collector's item and display in Legion. Also legacy set bonus and the new choose your set bonus in SL.

Hmm my thought for it was removed items as defacto buried artifacts to collect I wasn't thinking anything you would use stat wise just for transmog.

It's because Zandalari Trolls live for so long, not enough have died to create a history to archeologize!

Or perhaps since they're the oldest sentient race in Azeroth, there would be too much to be unearthed? Many part of Zandalari have sunken during Sundering,/Cata?

There's no need to remove it (if by remove you mean 'delete'). There's plenty of interesting lore and flavor on the vendor items you dig up.

If nothing else, this thread reminded me I don't think I've touched archeology since WoD. Are the Legion weekly quests still a thing? I'll have to be more proactive in Shadowlands if they add some interesting stuff.

Archaelogy in Legion was fun, actually. It was tied to a story, instead of just mindlessly farming for pieces in some areas, like in Cataclysm. There's 1 particular quest taht gives a flying mount and another that gives an heirloom polearm

My problem with archaeology is that it is draining and taxing.. This is because of how little rewarding it is. I think after you complete each dig site you should be able to "prospect" the fragments and craft like you do now. That way each dig site you feel like you accomplished something rather than flying around to 5+ dig sites just for one item. Also, knowing exactly what you are crafting takes out the "fun" I guess you could say of discovering something from the area. It's more of a "I'm crafting this and I need X fragments". Rares / Epics should be something you craft after getting tokens from each dig site. For instance each dig site gives 1 token, but each dig can proc one (so up to 6 I think it is now). Then just require X amount of tokens to craft an item.

The Legion quests feel terrible because you have to wait so long for certain ones. WoD was just terrible all around. MoP I can't remember if you crafted anything special. Cata could use the revamp as well because it is exhausting going through 300+ digs and still not having the epic proc or the jar with the blueprints, etc.

Which initially was by far the most interesting reward until they fixed it. They'd basically copied the item info of another item and gave it a new name and item ID which meant it originally functioned like the only 1H polearm to have ever existed in the game.

It could be transmogged to any 2h weapon that the class wielding it could equip, so it was possible to dual wield polearms or staffs on monks if you had 2 of them (it wasn't properly programmed as an heirloom either, so it didn't get added to the heirloom tab, but you could still get 2 or more my completing the archaeology quest on multiple characters).

Probably the most bland thing there is in wow.

Could have been so much more instead of "create this item 100 times"
Rather have it removed and slap in treasure hunter title or something's fancy title or some cool toy shit. I used to think first aid profession was cool like "i'm mummy'd myself or something" Idk they could be something like make it golds or some fancy contest who get it first get handsomely rewarded.

Indeed the most bland activity ever created in an online game.

They could probably amp it up a bit by having fights in between because players have disturbed the spirit or soul residing or guarding the archeaologic find in SL Rare mobs, etc.
Or perhaps they can include the Baal chain quest or Uuna as part of archaeology instead of a stand alone quest.

They should include survey inside sanctuaries, dungeons or raids and caves, goldmines and even within bodies of water.

Survey can also detect PoI in floating islands, island expedition, and can spawn archaeological finds from series of chain quest.

Surveying has a chance to trigger and spawn mobs which calls out disturbed spirits, agitated souls, earthbound ghosts, etc. for SL.

Perhaps they may try to tone down fragmentations from find and instead conduct an archaeological find into several "piece/s".
They may iterate a 10 course/pages book, a 3-8 peices to complete an archeological find.
Some items might need more fragments such as a jewelry with several beads 20-50 (beads pieces prayer beads for example) or a completed skeleton of a creature (skull, ribs, limbs, digits, etc.)

They may integrate other profession in trying to "restore" an archaeological find such as using cloth, thread, ingot, unprocessed ore, gems, inks, leather, and more from other profession.

Discontinued items will become part of archaeology and not just Feats of Strength:
    - bring back Sceptre of Celebras and have it "identified"
    - Keys from various dungeons which have been removed such as Scarlet Monastery.
    - Include old zones such as Ruins of Gilneas, Dire Maul for archaeological finds and for replayability of old dungeon besides Battle pets.

Old gears are part of collection instead of just having them in transmog tab allow some of your favorite weapon or armors to have its own display rack as part of archaeological finds and if not "make a replica" from them.

Old content become part of Archaeological collection/museum:
    - Scythe of the unmaker, Ateish, Twin glaives of azzinoth, Sulfuras, Shadowmourne, etc. Make them as part of your museum.
