The gym will help by burning calories and increasing muscle mass and thereby base metabolic rate, but by far the biggest change to body composition comes from changing one's diet. Being consistent with small changes is best, not drastic sudden changes that are unlikely to stick.
Your friend must not be in a calorie deficit, no matter how much they workout. A person that works out 6 hours every day will still get fat if they spent the remaining 18 hours a day eating burgers.

I've seen people not exercising a single moment in a day lose weight, and I've seen gym-nuts gain weight.
And it's come down to diet in every single case. The only exception, was 2 of my relatives. It later came to light that they had PCOS AND Thyroid issues. Diet still became their main source of weightloss once they were properly medicated. It was amazing to see, really...

I'd like to see pics of people who claim going to the gym is a waste of time. It is true that your diet is a major part of losing weight and getting healthier, but cardio and strength training accelerate weight loss and promote heart health. People who go on crash diets never keep their weight off. It's a lifestyle change and people who work out, or are at least active, combined with calorie counting will be healthier than people who just diet.

I'm truly sorry for you if that's what you understand from what I wrote.
I honestly dont want to have to continue this considering how closed your thought process is, but for the sake of conversation please do enlighten me with your thought process that led you to such understanding when I said "dont start blaming when you know nothing, OP might even talk about herself as far as we know"
First, what kind of "fat" are we talking about? Obese? Simply overweight?
Second, what does she do when she visits the gymn? I see a lot of young women doing workouts with weights that won't result in any kind of resistance to your applied force. Like bench-pressing 5kg or so. You either have to do heavy cardio / HIIT or work on those muscles if you want to see any effect. I prefer the latter as more muscle mass = more calories burned during the day/while you do not workout. No, she won't bulk, she'll just get stronger.
If you're at a caloric deficit then you don't need to exercise to lose weight. The issue is getting to a caloric deficit, which is obviously made easier when you're active and your body is burning up energy more fruitfully. We see all the time that some people can just eat and eat without putting on weight, while others need to be more careful and put on weight easily, it's because the energy our body uses from day to day isn't static and differs from person to person, even when we're sitting on our asses.
And you have different conditions that result in weight issues, or eating the wrong foods for your body that results in your body storing more energy as fat... It's a complex situation that I'm not qualified to really try to explain but I've watched a bunch of podcasts with doctors and nutritionists to know it's not always so simple. When I lost weight a few years back by changing my diet and eating windows I went from being slightly overweight my whole life to seriously struggling to maintain weight and having people comment that I needed to put on weight, and during that I did no exercise, I just melted.
Weight loss is mostly done in the kitchen (or by staying out of it!).
