Communion, definitely Communion. Fire in the Sky too, but after I read the Walton story, I realized the movie was just a horror movie loosely-based on his story. I got really into this stuff in my teenage years, probably got about 6 hours of sleep during that period. Not every night, I mean in total.
Have you seen Intruders? It's a treat as well.
It's this

I've been watching horror films since I was 6'ish. Never had a fear from them. But what has always creeped me out is the void darkness of the deep depths of the ocean or large bodies of water... what you can't see lurking beneath. The unknown.
I vaguely remember it. I think I watched it when it came out. Also watched that fake home video they marketed as being real, The McPherson Tape.

And so many documentaries. When family or friends watch newer stuff on UFOs or alien abductions they still pester me to see if the shows are how things are depicted correctly.
That being said, the recent series, Project Bluebook, I actually liked a lot. You seen it? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6632666/
Blue Book won't be that bad, it's loosely based on the actual Project Blue Book. It's entertaining.
oh, also, there was another TV movie, Visitors of the Night, about alien abductions and breeding/hybridization experiments.

The examination scene in Fire in the Sky was terrifying, especially the part where he gets free and finds that man still alive with his lower half missing.
But nothing, NOTHING, will ever match the doorway scene from Communion...
Outer Limits?

American Horror Story also had a similar subplot one season, with aliens and a mental asylum.

Quite a few people who grew up in the 90s in the UK will probably remember that face.
