I don’t know, I grew up in a country with no black people, then the first place I lived at in US was Brooklyn, NY, projects. I never learned to fear black people... but, all of my family has... /shrug

Davie says they fully investigated over 100 complaints made against the NYPD over 18 months, starting in January of 2018. What they found were examples of children as young as 8 being frisked, held up at gunpoint, and handcuffed.

“Kids are kids. They do kid things, from horseplay to swordfights in the streets, even childhood fistfights in the streets. We all did it. That should not be criminalized behavior. That’s childhood behavior,” Davie said.

The vast majority of the complaints were made by kids who are black and Hispanic. For Hernan Carvente-Martinez, a Latino from Queens, his very first interaction with police came at the age of 12.

“I accidentally kicked the ball way too hard and it landed in traffic,” he said. “We were trying to explain it was an accident and cops were called into the situation.”

NYPD out there rounding up kids for horseplay for years now. They just happen to be black and brown kids, purely by coincidence.

This is why more "civilian" oversight of law enforcement is immediately necessary, and with the authority to penalize officers to match. Because oversight without any ability to take action is just as pointless as cops with bodycams that they turn off.

and with the authority to penalize officers to match. Because oversight without any ability to take action is just as pointless as cops with bodycams that they turn off.

Civilian oversight can be effective with the proper authority to penalize. It's not a silver bullet. It's not gonna fix the problem on its own. But as part of a larger, comprehensive reform effort it can play a vital role in creating a deterrent for police to engage in bad behaivor.

You know, kinda like how cops and the legal penalties for certain behaviors are supposed to be a deterrent for bad behavior in general : D

You are human. Humans have biases. I do, you do, everyone does. America, and to be fully honest European nations and former colonial nations, dominated by European settlers have a rather unpleasant history with using race as a bullshit made up justification for colonialism and slavery.

It's not a specifically European phenomenon, it's just Europeans were so fucking good at it that they ended up shaping the global cultural narrative on race.

These narratives remain very very powerful in settler nations (like the US) as these nations derived their right to exist from these bullshit narratives, so our biases are shaped by these colonial era racist narratives, it permeates our culture, and if you don't want to be racist you have to make a conscious, intellectual decision to ignore your own ingrained biases, at least until our culture develops sufficiently that these biases are inherently rooted out from it.

To summarize.

1. You are human. Humans have biases.
2. American history has a racism problem. Which shapes our biases.
3. You have to make a conscious effort to ignore your own biases.

Yeah, like, at first glance I was a bit confused about the "ice cream" aspect given that they're clearly in coffee cups that looked cut in half. Didn't even notice the writing. Granted I had the benefit of seeing people in comments sections immediately point out exactly what it was for, but to see those and instantly think, "Clearly these dastardly BLM protesters created 'fake ice cream' that they could...uh...well I guess rocks would do just as much damage if thrown at something or someone. I commented about this the other day, but the Spokane PD did a similar thing the other night, proclaiming they found a bucket of rocks placed to throw at police.

They got raked over the coals in the replies by people pointing out that what they were showing everyone was a planter and the pebbles at the bottom were meant for drainage to make sure a plants roots don't get too wet.
