When the quality of videos is too high

So I was watching a Netflix series on Ultra HD (4k) and I noticed that the video quality was so high, that it seemed too real. So much that the props started to look fake and you could see make-up details and such that just killed the vibe of watching a movie. It felt uncomfortable to watch.

Downgrading my netflix account to "standard" to watch everything in 1080p

Has anyone else had this issue?

I’ve had this problem since the better TVs started going out. It hits the uncanny valley real hard for me.

Oohh, I couldn't pinpoint what was off, but apaprently it's a motion smoothing thing called the "Soap Opera effect". I guess part of that is what makes it unconfortable to watch

It's not that, this "uncanny valley" effect is usually the result of high framerates.

no because i cannot afford the setup for a 4k monitor. i am confined to a mere 1080p. also sounds like a first world problem. i mean this kind of a post comes off to me as people with more disposable income complaining about shit that doesn't really matter.

I earn 1,700€/month after taxes. First world country, sure, but I don't think I have much disposable income. Considering rent is 800€/month, that leaves me with 900€ and I have no savings account

I just wanted to discuss this wierd feeling I'm having.

You can get cheap 4k monitor for <500e, well unde 500e. If you smoke and drink you probably spend more than that each year on that shit...

Most people end up buying things on credit anyway and paying it off often at 0% interest. I mean the whole reason credit cards were invented was for just that to create more money to spend that you don't even really own.

I first saw that Motion Plus thing on TVs almost 12 years ago. After all this time it's still terrible for everything expect sports. People should make sure it's switched off for any screen mode they use (except, like said, sports).
Now you see it. Now you don't.

Either switch it off or customize it, my TV has either "clear" or "smooth" and neither is any good, though it can be OK for animated stuff and sports.

I kind of had that when HD first came to DirecTV and I had a new TV. I think I was watching CSI and I could tell all of the imperfections on the actors skin. It took some getting use to but I liked it.

my limit on monitors is $150. $500 is insane to spend on a monitor. yeah when your poor like me you don't spend $500 on a monitor.
$500 is about a month's salary for me. not gonna waste it on a monitor.

I remember early HD when the sharpness levels were too high and the colors bled. I remember showing my dad a basketball game and he didn't know if the TV was messing up or I ordered some new expensive PPV feature. Good times.

Movies I have seen at 60 fps or more look terrible or disturbing.

I tend to avoid 4K live action cause I don’t like to see someone pores on my screen. Only 4K I want is for gaming

That wasnt the point i was trying to make. Do you smoke, do you drink? Do you spend money on stupid stuff? 500e isnt much if you take 1 year plan or 2 year plan. Most people I know make 500$ or less and still spend >100$ on smoking and drinking.
You will get monitor that will work for years and be viable to use even after 5+ years so i dont really see the reason why not to spend money. Look a it like this.
5 years is 1825 days if you divide 500$ by 1825 you get about 0.3c per day that will cost you to use something that has quality and will probably outlast all other hardware you have.

4K on my 22'' 1920 x 1080 PC screen feels very weird, and I've never been comfortable in using bigger screens for gaming. Just can't get used to it. I don't have issues with 4K on 60''/120'' TV screens though. It's probably a matter of distance, my PC screen is much closer to my chair than the TV is to my sofa. Never been able to see the pores on someone's skin as some posters alluded to... I suppose mild myopia has some advantages.

Hope you sleep well. With the lack of empathy the majority of you show i guess that won't be a problem. BB

Depending on the type of porn at 4K, it can be horrid or beautiful. YMMV.

Motion smoothing and 60fps is really bad with drawn animation as well. The amount of drawn animations can't be changed and the auto rendered ones were not meant to be there. This can make fast moving vehicles look like they are moving slow and mouth animation not match the dialogue.
