I'll be happy he's out, but I don't expect the Dems to do anything except triple-down. AOC will likely run in 2024 (she'd be insane not to), but I'm not sure she would usher in the progressive vision that so many of us hope for, or even that she would be elected in the first place.
one big difference between 2016
and i do think it is notable
is biden will hit the 50% mark on popular vote
hillary won but was still only 48% so one could make the silly argument she didnt win a plurality
but biden definitely winning a solid plurality of votes
so i guess a tiny moral victory over 2016..barely?
i think today shows if dems run left, were gonna lose next election, even though biden wasnt left, the gop strategy that worked in florida was to run against the progressive wing and progressive ideas. i just hope gop picks someone establishment..marco rubio is a free win for them in florida based on this elections results
I know lefties feel doom and gloom about Biden not getting a landslide, but it's important to remember that voters rejected Trump in 2016. They will also reject him in 2020 by a larger number of votes. The only reason it's so close is because of a rigged game.
Add to that all of the fuckery done by Trump and republicans over the past four years. Remove the voter suppression and the race is even further apart.
We still have a lot of work to do against the right wing propaganda machine and to help deprogram some of our fellow citizens. It can be done.
AOC is a good 10 years from running. Not to mention she doesn’t even meet the age criteria. My hot take is the only way Dems properly start building a majority is by finding a way to combat single issue voters. Until then, it’s open season. Cos really, whilst abortion/guns/gay marriage/religion and that entire culture war hoopla is a hot button issue, nothing will move.
The support bases of the two parties are changing which means that what the swing states are is also changing.
Republicans are doing far better with uneducated older white males and females which there are lots of in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Democrats are doing far better with young women, non-whites, college educated whites, which there are lots of in places like Texas, Georgia and North Carolina.
So going into the future Ohio is going to always be red and it'll be Texas, NC, Georgia, etc that decide who wins the presidency.
Even longer term the republicans are fucked because the blue shifting states are worth far more electoral votes than the red shifting states.
