So this election has made me realise something I hadn't thought much about before - various media agencies informally "call" the election once the count reaches certain thresholds. The full count in all states takes months. But the actual concession of the loser isn't technically connected to either event, is it? They usually do this at some point after election night, usually when the outcome seems inevitable.

But there's not actually any requirement for them to do this, is there? So what we will have is a bunch of unofficial media "calls" at some point (they're taking their sweet time), then some time probably in December the last of the counts will finally complete (probably in California, I remember in 2016 it took forever for Hillary's full popular vote advantage to be tallied due to all the postal votes in Cali), but if Trump doesn't actually concede it won't be officially "over" until that time - plus any recounts and legal action.

Officially at least it might be in limbo until January.

Expanding on this. I've noticed people think the states themselves are the ones that call it. I've seen many people in my facebook feed wondering why the last couple states won't call it.

If that's not worthy of a seat at the table and Biden/Democrats would rather give one to Republicans like John Kasich who lost Biden Ohio or the Lincoln Project who won Biden no Republican votes, that's fucking ridiculous.

Most know this, but also just a reminder that whether Trump concedes or not is simply a sportsmanlike gesture. There is no legal requirement for him to do it or anything like that. In many heated smaller elections, (sore) losers will often refuse to concede. This would be a first time that a departing President doesn't do it though I believe. But from a legal standpoint it's completely irrelevant whether he does concede or not, and it does change Biden from taking office in January.

Also if he physically refuses to leave the White House in January as he threatened this week he'd be breaking federal trespassing law as well as interfering with government business, and he would be removed forcibly by the Secret Service. Then they would choose whether to charge the former President or not, who would no longer have the ability to pardon himself after Biden's inauguration. I'd hope it wouldn't come to that, but that's exactly what would happen if he actually does that.
