Thumbs down Nintendo reportedly Canceled live-action 'Zelda' series after Netflix leaked plans

    SOURCE: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...x-leaked-plans

A Netflix deal to make a live-action The Legend of Zelda TV series was scrapped by Nintendo after word of the project was leaked back in 2015.

That's according to US comedian Adam Conover, who was working on a similar Nintendo project at the time.

Speaking last night on The Serf Times podcast, as dug by up supererogatory , Conover says he was in talks with Nintendo to make a Star Fox claymation project inspired by Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox movie adaptation.

But when The Wall Street Journal leaked word of the Zelda series, Nintendo got cold feet on the project - and all other plans to adapt its franchises.

"I worked at CollegeHumour and we had a secret project where we were going to make a claymation version of StarFox with Nintendo," Conover said. "I know this because Shigeru Miyamoto came to our office, and I remember that because I asked my boss if I could be in the office that day - 'cos it was the weekend - because I just wanted to watch Shigeru Miyamoto walk by. He told me no and I'm still mad at him...

"Then, a month later, suddenly there were reports Netflix wasn't going to do its Legend of Zelda anymore. I was like 'what happened?' And then I heard from my boss we weren't doing our Star Fox anymore. I was like 'what happened?'. He was like, 'someone at Netflix leaked the Legend of Zelda thing, they weren't supposed to talk about it, Nintendo freaked out... and they pulled the plug on everything, the entire programme to adapt these things."

Nintendo reminds me of that angry penguin meme in this case:

    Ohhh... what could have been...

I'm ok with this. I'm not sure Zelda would work well as a movie/series.

"Game of Thrones for a family audience" sounds terrible. Kinda glad this got canned at the end of the day, I don't think I'd want to listen to some Young Adult actor ramble on as Link while looking dead eyed and kinda confused because acting.

I'd argue this is for the best for the franchise. And our sanity.

Video game adaptations seldom work out , so kinda glad they ain’t doing it.

It's probably for the best. I can't think of many video game adaptions that have been faithful and of exceptional quality. They tend to take too many creative liberties with the source material for my liking.

I think this is probably a good thing. I have expect it to end up being some weird CGI/ live action thing like the Cats movie was
I don't play WoW anymore smh.

Especially Zelda. Link doesn't have a character, his character is whatever the player decides to project onto him. I can't even imagine the shit show that would happen out of a screenwriter trying to give him a character. Especially Netflix, "well he's a teen, so he's got to have teenage angst!" And the very thing that makes the game fun, all the puzzles, temples, and ADHD adventuring would make for a shitty on-screen story. The entire franchise would be creative liberty incarnate.

Nobody will doubt that this was a good decision.

Yay! I'm so glad Nintendo didn't partner with Netflix, lol. I mean Castlevania is good and all, but this is Zelda here. Protect that IP!

I'd rather Netflix NOT produce shows based on Nintendo IP's.

Not sure if I understand, if Castlevania was good isn't it a hint that Zelda might have been good too?

    I would have liked it.

Problem is people are quite bitchy when it comes to videogame adaptions. They have to be 100% faithfull of the game or it is shit.
That that will never be possible, as you cannot really translate gameplay into a tv show and the story itself often does not translate well into live action in its original version.

Also... why would i want to watch 100% the same i allready have seen ingame? I rather the adapt it with a new vision.

Like... lets say ME1/2/3. I know the story very well. I would expect them to use the same main cast of characters. But not neccesarily every companion and every side mission. Also some changes would have to be made withthe story itself as much of it comes from context of the fghting. Not fo cutscenes. Make it faithful but not identical. Then it can be a good adaption.

What never will work is anime. Because.... well... japanese productions are... cringy as fuck and american have to westernize it to make it a viable financial investment which again angers the weebs. Also: You cannot make faithful anime adaption of modern anime as it would basically be softcore porn.

The Castlevania animated show on Netflix did pretty damn well. Granted, it's not live action. I think if they'd tried to do what they did with live actors....it would have flopped.

Well yeah... anime... look at my next sentence for my opinion on that.

And yes i still think castlevania is anime even though it is not produced in japan.

Anime and Games are quite close in that regard. Larger than live characters who act in a way no one would ever act in real live because they would get weird looks

Seems like we need to blame the people who leaked the project, not Nintendo.

They hit 1 out of 100. What does that say to you?

Am I the only one questioning how ridiculous it sounds to cancel something over a single rumour? I have a feeling that this is "peak journalism" at it's finest.

Not really as Nintendo probably had a contract with Netflix that mandated complete secrecy. And well, it seems like the higher ups at Netflix often are incapable of keeping their mouths shut.

I was thinking something pretty similar: "Looks good...for a fan-made project. But man that would be bad if it was a big production."
