What is the greatest Western of all time?

Westerns have not been the most popular genre of movies for young adults since the 60's and 70's, but every now and then, we'll get a new classic. My favorite is Once Upon A Time In The West. Beautiful soundtrack, cinematography is breathtaking, and I just love the simplicity of the story. Chiefly among top criticisms of it, is it's supposedly too slow-paced and long. I disagree. Even scenes stretching on without any dialogue and seemingly nothing going on keep me engaged in the simplest and most nuanced actions from the actors; be it a long meaningful stare that says a lot more than dialogue ever could, or trying to blow away a pesky fly.

    Do you have a favorite?

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I've loved this movie when I was 10.

I heard this Leone guy is good at movies.

    Loved "Big Jake."
    "War Wagon" was pretty good.
    Of those listed, "Magnificent Seven."

Any answer other than "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is objectively wrong.

    There, I've said it.

    True Grit is listed twice...

Now, that could be once for the original and once for the remake...but, if so, that should be made more clear.

    Yojimbo.

Yes, it's a samurai movie, but Fistfull of Dollars is practically a shot for shot reshoot of it to say nothing of them plagiarizing the script.

Yeah... it was accidental, not sure how I did that, ironically it's not even in my top 5, neither version. lol

I really like Tombstone, great cast overall, but Val Kilmer really killed it in that film, but I don't think you can go wrong with most of the films on the list. Its not on the list, but Quigley Down Under, is a decent underrated "Australian" western.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly is the best movie ever made. An utter masterpiece where everything is perfect. The direction, cinematography, script, acting from the main characters and the soundtrack are all majestic.

The Good The Bad & The Ugly is one of the best movies period. Its theme song alone wins me over:

Both are excellent, but yeah OP should probably put the year on those

Does Dances With Wolves count as a Western?

And The Magnificent Seven is a remake of The Seven Samurai.

That's how it goes. They weren't that big on taking non-Western IP seriously back in those days.

My personal pick would be No Country for Old Men. But I think The Good, The Bad & The Ugly rightfully towers within the genre.
