You will find guys for every theory, scenario, you can't come later "oh, they knew all along!"

Climate science is about knowing how climate works, but there's nobody out there, legit, that will stand up and say "I know the forecast for every year for the next 30 years and THIS is how you need to invest your monies!" because weather changes all the time and nobody will risk their names, so possible scenarios you shouldn't paint as anything than possibilities, it's so easy to scream later "oh I see snow, im scared! lets spend billions!!!11 and then you get 10 years of drought...but hey..it's only money..in warm region...

Absolutely not, a singular event can and will trigger a review of procedures and infrastructure.

Harvey was considered a once in a millennia flooding event and triggered the installation of drainage pumps and a review of the site topography to adjust drainage channels where I work.

We're already in the process of reviewing steam line and process piping insulation/line tracing with plans to upgrade as a result of the current frost, because it caused a plant shutdown due to being unable to keep steam lines hot enough to run. I know a sister plant that's a cracker (Nat. Gas production) is also reviewing their equipment because some of their pumps shut down because of the cold.

Sit down, and be quiet, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

If you’ll shut up with the strawman arguments, allow me to kindly point you at the climate scientists making funding recommendations based on the known data surrounding climate change.

Or are you going to say that we shouldn’t invest in flood barriers for coastal cities, too? Hahaha.

You compare a warm state getting snow to coastal cities getting...water? Wow, what a brilliant comparison. Like the water level rising has anything to do with the weather that day or week?..christ..

This snow storm is a freak occurrence.

Again, this is really just you broadcasting how little you know about the topic.

Like how flood barriers are generally designed to protect against storm surges that are becoming more severe due to climate change even though we cant predict the exact rate of storm formation? Sort of like how winterizing protects against more frequent cold snaps even though the exact rate isn’t known?

Because it happens, not often but it does happen enough to prepare for.

You call four years ago frequent? Next one might happen in 20 years, or longer. You need a pattern of occurrences to warrant a huge investment. You still don't get basic economics?

I swear our brilliant minds in this thread would suggest that the middle east should prepare for snow storms being frequent, because that is one theory, scenario..

It's happened plenty of times that it would be a good idea to winterize the energy grid infrastructure for sudden cold fronts.

    Panhandle Blizzard of 1957
    Houston Snowstorm of 1960
    Blizzard 1964
    Blizzard 1971
    Arctic Outbreak December 1983
    San Antonio Snowstorm of 1985
    Spring Blizzard 1987
    North American blizzard of 1999
Christmas Eve United States winter storm 2004
    Groundhog Day blizzard 2011
    Winter Storm Goliath of 2015
North American Ice Storm of 2017

I'm sure Texas can pull itself up by the boot straps. They don't need any socialist help, right? The Fed is evil? ERCOT runs their own little energy empire, so this is what they get.

And don't go blaming wind turbines or green energy, when 80% of the state runs on fossil fuels. Maybe the state of Texas will actually learn some humility and empathy for other's problems.

Remember when the Tri state area got hammered by superstorm Sandy and Texas senators be like "well they don't need aid money". What goes around comes around.

In climatological terms; yeah. Especially when it happens to be bearing out a predicted trend of more extreme weather events, which we are seeing with all the droughts, and the fires, and the floods, and the cold snaps.

Next one might happen in 20 years, or longer. You need a pattern of occurrences to warrant a huge investment. You still don't get basic economics?
And like I said, we have a pattern of occurrences that warrants a huge investment to proof against events of this sort.

    It's called climate change, sweaty.

I am not much for conspiracy theory. Right now about 40% of the Texas' generation capacity is offline - 28 gigawatts from gas and coal that shut due to frozen instruments, limited gas supplies and low gas pressure & 18 gigawatts from frozen turbines and icy solar panels. The load has fallen so low that the frequency of the power grid dipped from 60 hertz to 59.3. Not good. Normally you don't want to be off 60 hertz by more than 0.02 hertz. The doomsday scenario is that the low frequency can automatically force power plants to trip offline and end up with total blackout for the entire state of Texas.

For a guy who appears to have literally no understand of the topic, you sure seem very certain with your analysis of the topic.

I remember how much sympathy the West coast got from President dipshit and his dipshitlings last year in yet another year of record wildfires.

pull yourselves up by your boot straps, government isn't for giving hand-outs, it's not my fault you don't have a generator or food storage in case of emergency, why should my tax dollars go to bail out their bad planning???? I thought they wanted to leave the Union, now they're seeking handouts? fucken Texan snowflakes can't handle a couple of snowflakes?

thanks, i got it out of my system. I'll accept punishment if there is one.

oh, also they have wind-turbines at latitudes much higher north than fucking Texas and don't seem to have problems. Maybe consider the people that installed those turbines cut costs by not installing the deicing feature because they didn't think they'd need it. shrug

    I do, actually.

That's why I understand capitalism is entirely unequipped to handle a crisis like climate change and relying on "investment strategies" isn't going to help anyone, because it certainly hasn't helped us thus far.

Well, you know. Besides creating food lines and telling us those only ever happen under evil Communist regimes.

Hey why not skimp on being prepared worked out so well for Chernobyl and Fukushima.

    It only happened once.....

All it takes is one event to cause a catastrophic failure that will end up costing way more money than the upgrades would have.
