What's so heartbreaking and depressing is the similar comments that don't specify the city. Because there are thousands of those, "I thought it could never happen here/this is such a safe place/I was just minding my business and then chaos/etc. etc." statements that, if you were to pull any at random, would be impossible to determine exactly which shooting it was said about.

If we want the morbidly depressing view of this: We're getting back to normal in the US.

After a year without any mass shootings (that I recall), we're back up to a few a week. After we have another school shooting then we know things are back to "normal".

Because as per usual, the only recourse to these senseless acts of violence is Thoughts and Prayers(tm).

I live in a relatively nice neighborhood. It's quiet, peaceful. Lots of middle-class folks, fairly diverse. We have lots of little shops within walking distance. People are out running, walking together. Whole Foods at one end of the main avenue, Trader Joe's at the other.

It's USA cliche around here and I love it. I walk to that Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I walk my dog at the local dog park. My kids ride their bikes and hoverboards out front. I feel safe here.

But that could happen to my family easily. It's chilling. It scared me legitimately and I don't mind saying it.

Shit, my quiet little town is apparently a den of villainy. Like, literally I pretty much live in Pleasantville right now (You ever seen neighborhood kids put on a ROLLER BLADING CHRISTMAS PAGEANT?!) and it's a tiny little town without even a single legit bar.

Human traffickers got busted shortly after I moved here last year. I think I recall reading about a few shootings and other surprisingly violent crimes too.

Even if it wasn't for this being in my face, having lived my whole life reading, "We never thought it could happen in our sleepy little town nobody has ever heard of!" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over has just hammered into me that it literally can and will happen anywhere.

Which doesn't help my mild neuroticism but hey, it keeps you on your toes at all times I guess?

“The shooter is named ARVADA, Colorado—Authorities on Tuesday identified the suspect in the shooting deaths of 10 people at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, a 21-year-old with a history of violence whose brother said he was deeply disturbed.“

He appears to be someone with antisocial disorder at least by the descriptions by his brother.
