    Recommend a processor

I have an i5-3570 with a 1155 LGA socket. Bought these 8 years ago. Now I'm looking to upgrade and play mostly MMOs (GW2, ESO, WoW and possibly BDO). Recommend me a good processor (and maybe motherboard, if I need a new socket). Not looking to spend more than $500 total.

You'll need a new CPU, board, and RAM.

If you aren't looking to spend over 5$00, a Ryzen 3600, 16gb ram, and a B550 board should come in well under $500 (~440 I expect). However Ryzen 5 hardware is difficult to get ahold of right now and will likely need to come from some 3rd party vendor or in local shops.

The i5 10400 is actually faster in most games. Also $100 cheaper.

My biggest quip is that you'd be buying from 3rd parties.

I actually wanted to get one up here in canada while I'm visiting and.. literally can't. The only thing available by both local and online retailers is Ryzen 7 3000s and Ryzen 7 5000s. No Ryzen 3 or 5, period.

You are looking at an Intel 10400 vs Ryzen 3600 for the most part. Ram is cheap now as well. Find a decent B motherboard (you don't need the overclocking) and you are ready to go!

If you could save a bit more you could go for the 5600x as well but probably would push into $600 range.

With the dropped prices, you have multiple options.

    10400/B460/16GB@2993 for minimum.

And what you should actually get considering prices dropped insanely.

    10700/Z490/16GB@3200.

If you're buying a b460 board, I think you're still limited to 2666 memory, at which point the 10400f doesn't perform much if any better than the 3600/x

So it performs the same but costs $100+ less?

Get a B560 or Z490/Z590 motherboard instead of B460. Not being able to OC RAM is a severe limitation especially in the games you mentioned

Not true, if you do some research you will find that is not the case, and it supports 2933, so for the 5% in fps a Z490/590 is not worth the extra hundred dollars.

The 3600 is not priced good at this moment, if it was $179 where it use to be, yeah. But $229, no.

Edit: But if he wanted to spend $40 more he could get a Z490, but memory scaling on the 10400 is not as good as the higher end CPUs, and if he wanted to spend the same amount as he would on a R5 3600 setup he could get a 10600K or for a few dollars more a 10700k.

    Panser is correct.

You can, however, get a B560 board for almost zero extra dollars... and OC the memory.
