Is Bioshock Infinite the most disappointing game of all time from a dev POV?

    Developmental Cycle Point of View

When it comes to games with interesting and ambitious development cycles that practically had everything going for it, does it get worse than Bioshock Infinite?

Upon reading and watching about it, the game that released was really a shell of what was intended. That being said, this doesn't necessarily mean it's even a bad game (it is the least impressive Bioshock though), but as an all-out disappointment with what the developers were building toward, does it get much worse?

Bioshock Infinite isn't even a game that could be called a technical disaster, but so, so many things were cut or altered for various reasons it's actually pretty frightening.

Just looking for examples here with everything stated.

    Fallout New Vegas.

IT has so much cut content it's just sad. The dev's only had 18 months. So sad

For me the most disappointing game from dev POV is Wildstar. Because it actually had huge potential to be a great mmorpg but it failed due to the guys in charge being pricks.

Basically they ignored all the cool stuff that the devs would come up with and restarted the development from scratch several times until the publisher NCSoft told them to either stick to a deadline and publish or they will stop funding the project. So this lead to the major disappoiment and terrible launch of Wildstar that really had a toll on the playerbase from the beginning.

You want examples other than Bioshock infinite based on a very vague statement. Not sure what you want. Almost every single hyped "flop" has the development cycle you describe and even a lot of games that were hyped which didn't flop but was just less than advertised do fit as well.

Not sure why Bishock infinite is different to lets say No Mans Sky, Anthem, Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout 76, Any Bethesda game Fallout 3 and after, Andromeda, MGS 5 chapter 3 etc etc...

Think you have to specify a bit more what Bioshock Inifinite actually went through beyond "great ambitions they couldn't reach" because literally all games have bigger ambitions than they can complete. For every idea implemented 10 are scrapped due to various reasons.

There's so many bigger flops, and Bioshock Infinite didn't even flop. A lot of the games were already mentioned. Games that devs obviously put a lot of effort into but failed/didn't meet their potential for various reasons.

Yea.. no. Plenty of other games have been dumbed down due to various reasons - some to the point of being bad or at least deeply flawed. Bioshock Infinite was still a good game and fascinated plenty of people back then with the twist. Kumorii has a pretty decent list there.

You are welcome, Metzen. I hope you won't fuck up my underground expansion idea.

    Yeah, all of this.

It also should be considered that we are operating based on what the developers have told us, and in many cases they tell nothing, next to nothing, or quite a lot.

So making any kind of "what could have been" comparisons between various games, and trying to list them as "most disappointing" is already very flawed approach, as the ones we know the most about are obviously going to be ranked as "most disappointing", simply because we know a lot.

Can you link to this information, since I have no idea what is missing from the final product? I remember enjoying Bioshock Infinite a great deal, certainly more than the two previous games, so I'm not quite sure what was cut that would have made it better.

I don't know about that. Bioshock Infinite is the only Bioshock game I've ever finished, as opposed to the other two games which I barely enjoyed.

Bioshock Infinite most disappointing of all time? Ha ha ha... nope. It's not even in top 10 or heck top 100 of that list.

Yet fallout new vegas is hauled as one of the best in the series afaik. think about it having more content

I hated it because of the nauseating headbob that you couldn't disable. Other than that it looked pretty cool.

I really think people should dig in to this one for a decent saga if this topic interests you. Broussard wanted functioning computer terminals that could connect to the internet in the game at one point lol.

I do wonder if that particular feature was the inspiration for the way terminals work in doom 3. They were like a hi res mini applet in the game, though they did not connect to the interwerbz directly they did ask you to reference it from time to time for passwords and so on heh.

You already got my top pick but I am going to put forth starbound as well. I really like the game but a lot more was promised during it's development cycle and I feel it really under delivered especially in the wake of terraria which it sort of promised to "one up'.

Obscure indie kickstarter that looked good initially but was almost unplayable when it was abandoned: Starforged

Part of the flurry of "hi def" minecraft builder survival games this released as a playable game and just got more and more barely functional features added then it was dropped lol. I guess it is hard to be disappointed when you don't have high expectations to begin with but as far as something you could actually pay for this has gotta be one of the most trash pieces of software on steam right now. *apparently it has actually been removed and is now free* http://www.starforge.com/ embrace the pain.

    This

I don't care about its development history. To me it's the best bioshock.

Why? Did they promise far more things than those that we have seen in the game? because i hugely enjoyed both the base game and the two DLCs. It could have been better yeah, but i think it was an 8/10 game, pretty solid.

Not sure if it's the most disappointing game of all time but definitely one of them.

I remember Duke Nukem Forever being pretty damn disappointing. 20 some years I think of waiting for another Duke Nukem game and that's what we got. A halfassed pile of garbage where their best highlight was playing with poop and drawing on a board that only happens in the first few minutes of the game. Kind of makes me sick to my stomach remembering the fact that I actually bought the overpriced collector's edition that dropped in price not too long after release from like $100 to $30. Was pretty mad. He deserves one last game made by a developer that will actually put time and effort into it instead of just rushing it out the door and banking on just the name alone.
