Considering they showed Mechagodzilla in the trailer it wasn't a surprise to anyone. But I do remember people thinking that "evil" Godzilla was going to turn out to be Mechagodzilla wearing a Godzilla skin framing Godzilla and starting the fight between the two.

It is though, almost the exact same thing happened in this movie as it did in the Mechagodzilla 3 movies.

They really heavily hinted at that being the case.

Yeah those aren't well known movies sadly.

I was hoping they'd take inspiration from those movies and make it an AI controlled mechagodzilla that ended up going rogue. Never thought they'd actually use the technomancy from those movies. So for people who are aware of the stories of each mechagodzilla I would say it was pretty out of left field. But for the average viewer I can see how it's not that surprising.
If the head was supposed to be dead what was the point of putting it inside of mechagodzilla? Why hook up the brain to a machine at all?

When I think of technomancy I think of psychically controlling machines with your mind and other magical stuff like that, not a brain hooked up to a computer taking control of the computer. And if the brain wasn't hooked up tot he machine then why was it even freaking there to start with.

It would've been a bonkers nod to the '74 flick, even if the idea of a Godzilla skin was as absurd as McG being made by monkey aliens from the Third Planet of the Black Hole. If there's ever a sequel, maybe the monkey aliens could come from Hollow Earth. Ooh, they can retcon Gigan or Megalon or whatever to have been made by them.

Apparently there was one planned and shot but it was added to an earlier point in the movie and I think I know where it was put. When Kong and the Survey team go to Hollow Earth, Kong is standing on a cliff and sees floating rocks and plays with one of them. He then crosses the gravitational fisssure and floats up from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere. Kong grabs onto a finger-like rock formation on the other side before he goes on his way. I do think this sequence may have been planned to be the post-credits scene.

They were using two skulls of Ghidorah to send telepathic communications from the pilot to the skull in Mechagodzilla. When the power source was uploaded into mechagodzilla is super charged the skull and awoke Ghidorah's conciseness which then took over mechagodzilla. Which falls under technomancy just barely at least.

I thought they pulled the brain from the skull and put it in McG, and controlled everything with the pilot and skull. I could be totally off.

That was the case, however when they uploaded the power cell it override the connection and the skull in Mechagodzilla woke up and took over.

Correct, and every time Apex Cybernetics tested McG Godzilla was able to sense it. That's why he attacked their facilities in Florida and was the main reason he paid Hong Kong a visit. When he got there, he was able to sense Kong and aggroed him after making a tunnel with Atomic Breath.

Oh and you can be damned sure Ghidorah's Skulls knew 'Zilla was nearby. The new power cell woke him TF up and it was on. That was why Mecha bulled 'Zilla so hard when it emerged. Nevermind the fact it was literally built to replace 'Zilla. I don't think this is the last we've seen of Mecha either. Either another company or a government will try to build an improved Mecha they can actually control. It's just a matter of time.

I'll be seeing this in a bit.
I'm not expecting Shakespeare. I'm not expecting something deep or meaningful. I'm not expecting a logical coherent script.
I want a monster movie where giant monsters are slugging it out. I expect to get that much.

    it delivers on that front

it is a very, VERY dumb movie, but it pretty much knows that and goes with it anyways, so I enjoyed the heck out of out, people constantly being dumb and all. i mean... it has all the clichés you can possibly think of. i'm pretty sure on purpose, because of how much and how blatantly it leans into those clichés. and once you accept it - its fun.

I have seen dumber. My favorite part was when that one lady says to the dude, "What happens if Kong doesn't lead us to the hollow earth?"

    I fucking howled with laughter.

Edit: Unrelated, but I was delighted we saw a lot of Mechazilla in this relative to the limited amount of time we saw other titans in King of Monsters.

    I just rewatched last night.

Reminded me of how unnecessary Team Godzilla (Maddie, Friend and Mr. Nutcase) really was for the movie. They were basically just there for comedy relief and failed hard at it. Monarch was literally out of the loop with both Teams which was pretty odd even with the new chief. Is Ren Serizawa a relative of the former cheif? Unless we get a prequel story--and there should be one to at least explain how Apex Cybernetics got Ghidorah's Skull--we won't know since he's either dead or brain dead which are basically the same thing.

Also, Godzilla and Kong fought twice in Hong Kong. I missed when Nathan said "Round two goes to Kong" at the end of their nighttime fight. So, it was 2-1 Godzilla overall.

They are called 'blockbusters' and they are entertaining. Sometimes you just want explosions and fight porn.

Like the movie, wanted to watch monsters beating the shit of each other and i was pleased.

Of course, the movie is biased/tendentious to Godzila, cause it is his trilogy, and of course he won the round in the water, but the last one was pure bullshit to me, they didn't rly pull out all Kong can do, like, it is unbelievable to me that kong didn't bite, a single time, and for why reason he didn't fetch the axe for the third round was just plain simple plot armor.

Nevertheless, rly liked, and i hope, if there is any, sequence.

When the one doctor says they built that dome to protect Kong because Godzilla would kill him since Kong bows to know one, I was wondering if that really would play out. I'm thinking that Godzilla's hide is similar to a crocodile except a million times more dense and permeated with the same energy that the axe gets imbued with. So Kong wasn't going to have a good day.
Still, he wasn't the enemy Godzilla was looking for. Indeed neither of them were the bad guy here.

Yeah, it's hard to be worried about Godzilla when the dude shrugged off two nukes to the face.

Good to see Kong use his agility and brain during the Hong Kong battle, though. He got crafty with that decoy crane, and used the skyscraper terrain to great effect.

Watched it on opening day and again with some friends last night.

I loved it, and didn't expect too much from it. It was not a movie you went into with expectations of a compelling narrative with deep characters and great character development, yadda yadda. Professional critics and some of the self-styled ones here on MMO-C need to learn to adjust their expectations for the medium.

My only major gripe with the film was the pacing, although I feel that the quick pacing was needed for this film in particular.

Loved how this version of MechaGodzilla is closer to Kiryu from the Millennium Era version of MechaGodzilla (being possessed by the soul/consciousness of its predecessor) and I saw some things stand out: the title sequence showed that all of the other Titans were "defeated" so is that to imply that, at that point in time, that Kong and Godzilla were the only Titans left on the planet's surface?
