Isn't it funny how all the criticism is leveled at women when they "don't much the appearance". I mean, you've got 6'3 Hugh Jackman playing 5'3 Wolverine and it's the best casting ever. But this girl gets shit on because her cup size is too small and she's "ethnic looking".

Well, one was a kind of underground Sci-fi series that a lot of people have never seen. the other was a Major Film from the biggest film franchise running right now. It doesn't discount her role in Killjoys...it's just saying where more people will know her from.

Yes she also was pretty muscular for a woman (but honestly in comic books aren't most women more on the muscular side than "petite" or "thin") and yes she has much larger breasts but again doesn't most women in comics have that. It's a bit ridiculous because, in Marvel canon, she's Hyrkanian. Hyrkania is, canonically, part of modern Iran.

At best, she's Turkish or Tartar or a Hun, maybe Mongol, or some mix thereof. It's not like she's Irish or something.

Red Sonja became the inspired meme for "chicks in chainmail." Were Christina Hendricks younger and toned she'd fit the role.
Christina Hendricks isn't even a natural redhead...

It's just another example of how hard it is for women to match the unrealistic expectations that these types of comic book roles come with. It's tough on the men as well, but at least most of them get padded costumes to help get them that much closer to those crazy bodybuilder proportions. Most of them don't get shit on for their bodies when they're cast since I guess it's just assumed they're gonna roid up (though every now and then there's a Pattinson that throws the fanboys into a tizzy). For women they apparently gotta have the boobs and the musculature first and foremost, and maybe the acting chops as an distant afterthought.

There are no well known, established actresses that have the physical attributes to match Red Sonja, and while I'm sure the casting director can find a woman who does match the look the odds that she'll have the acting ability to carry a big ticket comic book movie (because they all are now) is slim to none.

I dunno, I think Hollywood in general tends to underdeliver on athleticism in female action roles for the most part. There are some really great exceptions (Jurnee Smollett is, to me a rising female action star, and Cynthia Erivo could definitely do more in action as she wants to), but in general, speaking as a retired athlete, and maybe someone who's a bit hypercritical of the women in that particular way, a lot of fight scenes look like they're choreographed and performed like they're a Paula Abdul video or something.

From what I've seen of Hannah John-Kamen, she seemed to do a decent job in Antman and the Wasp, from what I remember, though I'm sure much of that is stuntwomen. I do think she's potentially miscast anyway, not because of her look, but from her personality. She seems to play more dour, muted personalities so far, and from what little I know, Red Sonja's supposed to be more extroverted. Of course, she could play things completely different from what she's played in the past and that could be totally fine.

Wolverine was more about attitude, temperament, and claws. Having a decent first couple of movies to show those off won me over. Had they shown "Origins" I'm reasonably certain we'd all have a derisive laugh. (Especially at what they did to Wade Wilson)

If they toss out everything about the character that made it popular then why even call the movie "Red Sonja?" Are they trying to make a statement?

I'll be fair and wait and see since it's too early to tell anyway but the script writer isn't moving my expectations from the earlier attempt at a Red Sonja movie.

Is she going to dye her hair red for the movie? Or is she going to wear a wig?

Redhead is a haircolor, not a ethnicity. They don't have to cast someone who's a original redhead. Hair can be colored. Like... what?
She's half Norwegian and half Nigerian, so it's not strange that she looks "ethnic", whatever that's supposed to mean, I guess.

Also the outfits Red Sonja wears are fucking stupid and should be changed anyway. Nobody gives a shit about the basement weebs that'll cry about it and give it a low score on Rottentomatoes because "bewbs and bikini!".

Since long hair is a liability on movie sets of action movies, and most of the long hair/long beards you see are fake, it's pretty safe to say she'll wear a wig.

They don't need to jump through anything. They can just change it and people will be like "YEAH" while they proceed to not watch it anyway.

Obviously, that's one of the reason why I don't have any hopes for this movie.

Red Sonja just can't be turned into a PC PG-13 story.

The fandom of Red Sonja has grown, and become much more diverse than horny teen boys from the 1970's. Hoping the film gets that and gives us a Sonja that has a lot of depth and fun.

Reading back some of the old Conan production notes. Despite being a "pulpy" film backed by Dino De Laurentius. The director John Milius took the film very seriously. Using a lot of coaching to get Arnold to elevate his acting. Bringing along a few serious actors like James Earl Jones and Max von Sydow.

I meant small in height, I loved her in Killjoys and was a treat to see her in ant man, so I like the actress, her ethnicity does not bother me either, I liked momoa as conan truth be told, being a redhead is as simple as a shitty wig which I hope they do not do, but the stature is not there to my eyes, not that I am a Red Sonja expert or to be honest even much of a fan, she just does not seem 'big' enough which is not to slight her, the large chick in game of thrones physiclaly matches the role, even if just physically.

I hope so, as said above I like the actress and have no problems with anything about her besides the 'bulk', not that I want a she-hulk, just a observation that the role should be for an amazoness type so to speak.

The same complaints were made about Gal Gadot playing Wonder Woman.

Is that why the covers of her comics that were released even just last month look like this?

Inb4 my post gets infracted because these images are too skimpy even though the thread is about her.

I'm not sure what a Red Sonja is.. it goes right over my head. I can tell it's a female superhero. To be honest, I probably will not have much interest in this movie. That doesn't mean other people will not be interested. They would need to make a big impression (trailer) for me to even look into it further.

These are pretty much my sentiments. I'm tired of the control, repression and stigma. I really detest seeing it in our entertainment, more so our video games. I am an advocate supporter of letting females wear what they want to wear. Not what other people deem as appropriate. I have come across numerous articles stating that dress codes are in place to reinforce systemic violence. That are ultimately enforced unequally.

Dress codes has made a value judgment about which sorts of clothes and behaviours are appropriate, and which are not. And often, these value judgments create oppressive and discriminatory frameworks that further marginalize certain groups.

Policing what people wear, instead of teaching them to be respectful and consensual with others, assumes that certain outfits will protect you from sexual assault while others will make you vulnerable. This is a myth. This is victim blaming.

Looking at the history of the bikini. Sources are taken from the website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikini
Archaeologist James Mellaart described the earliest bikini-like costume in Çatalhöyük, Anatolia in the Chalcolithic era (around 5600 BC), where a mother goddess is depicted astride two leopards wearing a costume somewhat like a bikini.[8][26] The two-piece swimsuit can be traced back to the Greco-Roman world, where bikini-like garments worn by women athletes are depicted on urns and paintings dating back to 1400 BC.

The article goes into detail of human civilization with the Precursors in the West and Social resistance. I find this to be appalling behavior. Women were forced to dress and wear what was classified as appropriate or what other individuals wanted them to wear. Corsets in the Victorian era come to mind. There were many critiques of the corset later who believed that corsets were not merely a fashion dress but a tool to oppress women.

I also find it appalling that a huge controversy came in about overly sexualize female characters. From probably a mass majority of females that don't even touch video games or not interested in fantasy. I don't want or need repression, oppression or control from any gender.

Overall my point is they should let women be what they want to be. Some might argue it was influential but regardless it is that individuals choice. I am supportive of every different type of individual getting the proper representation. This includes some women that prefer pants and armor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but they don't need to be judgemental, controlling, enforcing violent, and ostracizing behavior.

They managed to let Wonder woman keep her costume. I'm not sure if this will be the case with Red Sonja. I know I keep wanting better mogs for female characters in video games. Including World of Warcraft. Which this game has roots of having clothing for every type of gamer. Instead of preaching intolerance and shoving a poncho on Sylvanas. (mid-riff controversy) I would advise if anyone has intolerance towards this to maybe then to not subject their children to this behaviour. As the game that has had a lot more mature content than a belly button showing. . .

I just don't think she has the physique for it, but hollywood camera tricks may make it work.

Interesting to see how it works out (if the movie ends up happening, been on development hell for too long already).

If her outfits are stupid and nobody gives a shit about her fandom... why make a movie about her in the first place?
