Chinese teams boycotting the game until a player who bad-mouthed CCP gets banned

The Chengdu Hunters, Shanghai Dragons, Guangzhou Charge and Hangzhou Spark, the Overwatch League’s four Chinese teams, announced a boycott of Park “Saebyeolbe” Jong-ryeol, the hitscan DPS player for the Seoul Dynasty, after he spoke about China, Taiwan and Hong Kong on his Twitch stream. Management from each team have put out statements on Weibo saying they will not play or scrimmage against Saebyeolbe.

Saebyeolbe was streaming on DouYu, a Chinese live streaming service, in early April when he mentioned both Hong Kong and Taiwan inconspicuously. In a Twitch stream on April 12, he said he was reprimanded for the comments by Seoul Dynasty staff.

“What can you do,” he said. “If you want to make money in China, you have to become their dog.”

Blizzard’s fate of bowing down to China too many times.

Back in our days no sane person would come up with such 'news'. Now literally every little fuss gets a drama.
At what point in our 'IT evolution' did we allow bigots and holierthanthous govern what can and what cannot be spoken around?

No we dont, this is nothing like it.

He's right and ironically about the very reason he will be reprimanded. The world wants to be China's dog to make more money.

Overwatch League should have a set of rules for player conduct and if blizz wants to intervene they will no doubt use that to do it.
You can't mess with China because that is where the money is, and you can't really mess with Korea because that is the e-sports mecca. From a business perspective Blizz has no good option here. From any other perspective fuck China.

I find it amusing and interesting how states and its citizens that we are told not to like in the here in the West use our weapons against us. (South Korea is us here)
USA invented, like many other things, the art of cancel-warfare, and now it is used against us.

Are you saying that Blizzard should wilfully make less money? I don't think that Bobby or his stock-holders would like that.

No, they didn't. Were you not taught history or did you simply forget?

The European Witch Hunts is certainly a far more extreme version of this. Baseless accusations leading to angry mobs burning you alive.
The Inquisition and all similar agencies that would hunt down, torture and kill those who spoke against the norm.
In 1979, the Monty Python movie Life of Brian was banned or otherwise censured because it was perceived as offensive.

Cancel Culture is mob justice, and mob justice has been a dark part of humanity for millennia.
Atleast we aren't burning people in the street anymore.

It's sad but it is what it is. It's not like the management companies have a choice either if they've received direction to take this stance.

I've met people from China studying/working on the other side of the planet and they were still afraid to talk about their government or things like the Tiananmen massacre, so I find it interesting that these young gamers are just letting all hang out in front of however many people watch them stream.

    1. Blizzard is a Buisness. Not UNICEF. If they think loosing players in the west will bring them more in China why, from buisness standpoint, should they not do it?

    2. Why bring US into it? Cancel culture is a new term but certainly not a new phenomenon or even invented in the US.

ALso, did Blizz even do anything in this case? Sounds like the team managers intervened

What's up with overwatch and china drama? So many competetive games but people choose to create china drama over this platform, why?

Thank you for this. People thinking "cancel culture" is new and/or specifically American just do not understand history.

The drama is being created by the Chinese teams management. They are refusing to play against someone who mentioned two countries that the CCP deny are countries.
It's the equivilant to an EU player stating "US government really did a number in South America" and all the US teams refusing to play fixtures against that player. It's a massive overreaction that only exists due to the Chinese governments influence in every facet of their countrymen's lives.

What a shocking surprise? Too much $ in the Chinese market makes any and all companies chasing those bucks CCP's lapdogs. Not to forget the netizens on that side of the great firewall are being pumped with the CCP-approved form of patriotism in an ever increasing manner, aided with their state-funded troll factories, which means any slip from the approved topics and opinions means you're getting in the middle of a cat 6 shitstorm. Plus the company involved put in serious risk of losing their market. Unless of course the involved personnell will get heavily punished, banned, erased, shot, whatever and will be apologizing in the most regretting way. To underline and emphasize that this is CCP's world, and you're just pawns in it.
And since money talks, no actions have been taken, nor will be. Other than the CCP-enforced ones, that is. Good luck.

Lmao, are they not aware that they are basically undermining their own livelihood? They are boycotting their own work, great management they have. If I was a player on that team I would leave.

So they're creating drama because they think Blizzard will bend over

  19. #19
Fuck the CCP. They want to Boycott a non-Chinese citizen (South Korean) for criticism? Might as well ban all the westerners that did the same thing while we're at it...

Yes, and Blizzard should simply tell them to suck it and they can either play against the team or the can forfeit.

It should be a very simple solution.
Since its Overwatch I assume these Chinese teams payed a ton of money to play in the Overwatch league. Their own problem if they disqualify themselves, their not getting the money back.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death
