Hots is not canon, and the quotes there are just random meta jokes.
Unless, of course, you want to argue that Varian casually mentioning 3v3 arena and Thrall referencing RTS games and saying stuff like:
is just a regular occurrence in the warcraft universe.Originally Posted by Thrall, in HotS
As for the magazine source, that happened in 2010, and is with this short story clearly no longer canon.
It's not. It's SHE from the very beginning. Blizzard just messed up the name.
Chronormu is male in the story.
Only referred to with she/her pronouns after her transformation, which is when the scene in the leaked page is set in.
Now, is she a trans woman?
Is she non-binary?
Does she just like presenting this way, or simply do it for the funzies?
No one knows, just pick whatever interpretation you prefer.
Formerly known as Arafal
Wasn't this a thing back in WotLK? I am pretty sure we knew this? This story only just confirms what we knew.

Wrath is when the gender of dragon names was fleshed out, making Chromie a male by name.
Before that, there were no identification of Chromie's gender, other than, 'female gnome' model and mechanics. And if people cling too much to the model they had in the past, then I guess we could say that Sylvanas burnt down her home, since she was a Night Elf model first.
Now people cling to Heroes of the Storm references, and that Chromie addresses him/her as a 'she' while in 'female gnome' form, meanwhile, we know by the lore that dragons may take on a visage of their choice.

no the book calls chronormu he for a fair bit of the book, but after becoming of age to decide their humanoid form, they become chromie and go by she.
the hots qoute is non-cannon, and likely to be changed later.

yes, the story calls chronomu "he" and "him" many times.
I've known this ever since they used the male dragon model for her in caverns of time purge of stratholme. This just gives it more credence than what some might believe was a visual error in the game.
Can we just shoot down the HotS reference already? It is not canon unless people believe that Gazlowe/Genn/Alexstraza/Chen/Anduin/Malfurion/Tyrande/Thrall/Valeera/Li Li (and she is a gossip, talks all the time) takes a portal to endless battlefields, scoring endless kills, meeting creatures of different worlds, and then zooms back without a word - not to mention the multiple dead characters running around in the Nexus interacting with people that are alive, while also being in Shadowlands.

Thats not how "trans" works, lol
The dragon simply adore female gnomes and dont have a fragile ego
This was confirmed literally years ago, in like Pandaria or even before that.

Sadly unable to be looked up. My point is, there is no available source for the statement that apparently was meant to be said in 2010 (The naming pattern was introduced around 2008 and 2010) in a magazine barely sold other places. Meaning, the source is so obscure that most still went with the instinct of saying male/female because there was no other source, other than an apparent issue number, no pictures, or anything.
So, we have lore hidden so far away, that Blizzard could easily go with the popular vote by a group.

Or it's very likely Chromie is fucking with Kalec and is indeed a female dragon with a male name.
Ah yes, the one reason to get invested into WoW lore: dragons' preferred genders

wasn't Chromie's gender thing more due to there being the 1 dragon model, thus telling a male dragon from a female one was impossible till she shape shifted? Even the dragon aspects are basically genderless in their dragon forms because of the lack of external clues
