The problem with old talents were that flex points were mostly meaningless. The problem with new talents is that there aren't choices in many cases. If I had to choose which problem to have, it'd be the problem with the old system: You can make flex points more meaningful and useful. You can't make a trinary choice less bad in most cases, especially because the new talent system has a significantly higher power budget on a point-for-point basis than the old system.
