Yes, it is. People play what they like, they play LoL because they like LoL. They play BRs because they like BRs and twitch streamers stream what people want to see, they don't play things because of an imaginary lack of choice but because they are hundreds of thousand viewers for those games.

You being judgmental of these genres is your problem, nobody cares.

And as many said, FF XIV is doing really well too...

I just assumed the mainstream multiplayer social lobby gamer was still playing Discord with Fortnite(spelling?) in the background.
I stopped playing destiny 2 when they did the same shit they did with hearthstone. I don't want the cards/guns i gridned/bought to be removed from the game every 6 months/2 years or whatever.

Yep, I quit then too. "Sunsetting" was such a load of crap, imo, but they finally did revert it, which is why I am currently giving the game another go.

Just because Blizzard is hemorrhaging players because their games have become horrendously repetitive and monotonous doesn't mean the rest of the industry is facing the same problem.

I would suggest you check out the game in development called "star Citizen" currently in development. just check the game play on twitch, dont throw money at it yet. it looks very promising. the dev team over 3 years has grown from 2 guys in a basement, too 700 people, involving several small developer teams, scattered all over the world, each group working on specific targets. updates and features are constantly being added for what will be a space combat mmo. this project is showing a lot of promise, and there is a free play event going on until the 27th to stress test some of their recent updates. last free play event was 5 weeks ago, when they last needed to stress test more content, and their smarter Al npc's.

To describe the game, its an alternate universe, but basically the show The expanse" as an mmo.

There's never been as many games in the history of computing as now, your problem is your definition of "popular".

Please don't try to sell someone a game that is still years away from release. Not very honest to do so.

Yeah don't listen to this guy. They are now amidst a huge controversy over them splitting a game mode into a stand alone game before even finishing sc. Yhe 700 dev thing is also a bold face lie as most those people are volunteers, not paid employees. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Yeah, the number of folks playing games has never been higher. The # of games that are "popular" is at also at an all time high.

Yeah, the single-player games offline are definitely slimmer pickings, as the current trend is towards always-online multiplayer games. While there's nothing wrong with a multiplayer session, sometimes you just want to chill on your own. Unfortunately, it's easier to make returns on a multiplayer game, and the other current trend is money > art in terms of goals... aka, many companies would rather make a game with making money as the primary goal versus doing something interesting or for the players. However, the indie market has been picking up the slack while the AAA companies move further away from the players. Quite a few indie games have been some of the best games released in recent years.

FFXIV is two months away from a new expansion. It's a great time to get into it right now.

You could also look into games such as Monster Hunter World if you haven't already - it still has a pretty active playerbase.

I never understood this mentality, why would a game be thriving because people instead of playing it go watch others play?it should be the oposite,it should be DEAD on twitch because everyone is playing it

It's like when babies don't have their parents in the same room as them, they are as good as dead for the baby until they walk back. If a game isn't on Twitch is bad or not worth playing or something.

I got plenty of games to look forward to, and they ain't Blizzard.

this can't be serious. there's just way too much stuff coming out all the time it's hard to keep up. yeah sure there's been quite a few blunders with the triple A titles of late but still. we're defenitely not starved.
I had fun once, it was terrible.

I haven’t enjoyed playing MMOs myself. I do enjoy games with some sort of hub for players on the same server like Warframe, but I do enjoy the solo runs better.

Firstly this is false, the development of Star Citizen began 11 years ago in 2010 and it had never been two people in a basement, it is six hundred people at present.
Secondly the only "game" it offers is arguing on the internet whether it will ever get released since after over a decade and 300+ million dollars all they got is ship models, some empty environments and a palette of small features that don't amount to an actual gameplay. Unless you find landing and launching your ship in stiff and clunky animations to be really thrilling.

The only thing relevant to the thread regarding Star Citizen is that it is described as one day being genre defining or even a gaming history milestone, but its reality is far from it.

Also The Expanse is too amazing to be put next to the Star Citizen title.
