My guess is a similar sort of thing to Blizzconline in early 2022

Most likely BlizzConline 2022, in Q1.

We'll get info about 9.2 shortly after 9.1.5 releases (2-4 weeks i'd say).

Expansion info will depend on 9.2 being the final patch, or if there's a 9.3 ahead. So it's anyone guess at the moment.

My bet is expansion reveal\details in summer'22, with a release Q1'23 or something like that.

Even if 9.2 isn't the final patch, we would most likely still hear about the expansion at BlizzConline.

9.3 will clearly happen because this expansion clearly feels too short without it and with my experience with their development process: they must have planned for 9.3 for sure.

But: there is a chance 9.2 will be very short-lived if they think Shadowlands is a disaster so 9.2 or 9.3 might not matter if you only care about the release date.

Then again: the game has been on an extreme downward spiral since WotLK so new expansions aren't the big saviors in the long term; a good game is.

It's also possible that they should reset the game entirely into a "Warcraft" game that has no notion of expansions at all. They have been burying their head in the sand about this since at least Cataclysm or MoP. Sure you can keep the die hard fans that want their time-lost proto-drake grinds but after a point those people are now mostly 40 and 50 years old so there is always great value in a game that resets most stuff (keep them as feats of strength to appease them) and besides: many old players would love a reset too.

Blizzconline obviously. There is no if or maybe here.

Even if there isn’t much to announce they will announce it. They just need the buzz a new expansion is bringing.

There will probably not be an expansion at all, until the harassment scandal is forgotten entirely; they will not want "harassment scandal-WoW releases a new expansion" headline ever; this can take at least 2 years.

This means we will either see a new expansion in 2024-ish or a rename of the game or if this becomes worse: a rename of the company themselves.

    Blizzconline most likely.

Though if its true that they plan expansions years in advance i think we can expect a bfa and sl quality expansion again and i doubt they have time to change anything planed just because they are in trouble or anything.

Hope im wrong though as i would hate another expansion like the past ones.
Do you hear the voices too?

The official announcement will be at Blizzcon-online this February. And rumors are that 10.0 will be a massive revamp of WoW, not just the typical 2 year expansion release. This new expansion will not be BfA 2.0 or SL 2.0, it will be "new" per what people in the know saying.

Oh you were at that Acti-Blizz meeting too?
The one where they were all like, "Hey guys, haven't we already been working on 10.0 for a while now? And haven't we already put a lot of resources into it? And isn't all the negative PR basically attached to the game as a whole and not to specific expansions? And wouldn't the financial consequences of a two year delay far outweigh the negative impact on sales of the lingering bad press?"

Some dude across the table: "uhh, yeh."

"I think we should probably push back to 2024"

And the entire room went nuts and talked about what a great and bold business move that was.

Yeah that meeting was pretty cool except for the stale donuts.

Or, they will announce it at Blizzcon in early 2022.

Act/ Blizz is a company that needs money rolling in. I would be stunned to see them sit on their hands longer than that.

I am surprised they haven't dropped some hints already (or maybe they have) just to get some small buzz going.

There is the argument that they've already cut SL short, that Sanctum of Domination was intended to be 9.2. A lot of the features of 9.1 were similar to features that launched in 7.2 and 8.2 Additionally x.1 raids have historically been not directly related to the main story (Trial of Valor, Crucible of Storm, maybe even Ulduar, although Battle of Dazar'alor is a counterargument), and Sanctum of Domination is squarely in the main story of SL and the story leads into the "final raid" of the expansion. A raid in Ardenweald, maybe even involving the Drust, could have been the original plan for 9.1

Never forget that WoD ended on a x.2. At this point, SL looks to be in the same state (if not worse) as every realistic analysis of active players shows WoW Retail as having fallen to number 2 for the past 2 months. I would guess, if Blizz is interested in regaining ground, that they would push faster to the next expansion (like they did with Legion).

New expansions always give them a huge surge in revenue and profits, so I would expect that to be their primary path right now.

They could pull off a Legion and reveal it in Gamescom or some other summer event. Failing that, Blizzcon 2022 (if the company's harrasment and PR status lets them host one).

Q1 Blizzconline is far too early since we won't have 9.2 anywhere near release at that point. Hell, it will be shocking it has evwn managed to hit PTR at that point

Well Bobby Kotick said that the release of TBC classic was the start of an "18 month content release schedule". That was in June, so I think the next classic expac will come out around Q4 of 2022, maybe Q1 of 2023, and the next retail expansion will be before that, probably around Q3 of 2022.

BfA's (real) main story was about the Old Gods, so yeah, BoD actually fit the "x.1 raids are usually a side story" view.

At Blizzon most likely, hopefully this time they'll work on an existing class, instead of making a fresh one from the ground up.

New class is more marketable than rework of existing classes.

Working on existing classes happens EVERY expansion. A new class would generate some actual excitement for the expansion among current, former, and non-players.
