On the other hand, you have China that pumped ridiculous amounts of money into its league for zero benefit, at least as far as their national team's performance goes. Their league is probably successful commercially and this may very likely be the only thing their federation and club owners care about, but their national team is garbage and doesn't seem to show any signs of progress.
Soccer in Canada hasn't even been a reality up until maybe 10 years ago. Once MLS started in NA, and you have this whole generation of kids who've come up now that come from backgrounds where the game is a big part of their parents past time, the emergence of these young star players would eventually happen. I'm honestly surprised it's happened as quickly as it has. I think if this Canadian team can advance to the round of 16, I'd consider that a huge win and the next WC they will be poised to be even better.

For a 0-0 draw that was a belting end to end game.

That's some upgrade, would need to double the capacity to explain how they had more people present than their official capacity figure while being half empty.
Ex-Mod. Technically retired, they just won't let me quit.

According to some FIFA official, they don't report actual match day attendance. Supposedly they report the number of tickets sold ("sold"), and the stadiums can hold more people than the official capacity bigbrain.jpg

That's some North Korea level of fact distortion going on.

It's calculated by "tickets sold" not "actually in the stands" :P

*edit* Should've read the rest of the thread first ^^

I don't think it's even tickets sold, seeing that a large part of the spectators are paid to attend.

And you don't think the Qatari government "bought" those tickets?

I mean it all comes down to the same thing, but they're working on technicalities for their stats :P

Don't know if they paid for it. 22 billion to host a World Cup but too much of a cheapskate to give workers a decent salary, you tell me.

    Workers != prestige, they're expendable.

Very impressive piece of acting by Joao Felix lul. Brought some life to this snoozefest, though.

    Aaand Ronaldo writes history.

Portugal being Portugal again. That never was a penalty, should've been a yellow card for diving.

We lucked out, Canada had our number, especially in that first half. Was also pretty unimpressed with the refereeing trio tbh. How they can give offside on that bad back pass from Hazard or how Canada ended the game with 11 (that scissor tackle on Openda O_O ) are misteries to me.

I still don't understand why the VAR works like it does
Why wasn't the VAR used in this case? That was not a penalty.
This world don't give us nothing. It be our lot to suffer... and our duty to fight back.

Canada yesterday, two clear penalties not given. Today a gift for Penaldo. Where's Nigel de Jong when you need him?

I feel like you could have put money on Ronaldo getting a penalty.

You forgot "how did the VAR room not give Canada two extra penalties"
