German police arrest members of the far-right plotting violent coup

German police have arrested 25 members of the far right so far who were planning to storm the reichstag, overthrow the government and establish a new leadership based on the 2nd Reich.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63885028

Imagine arresting the ringleaders of a movement who planned to invade the seat of government before it happened. Or even after it.

And what odds are there that russian money was involved?

Russia? Eh, who knows. I'm leaning towards not very high. It doesn't seem to be all that big of a group. I guess they could cause some chaos, for sure, but it's not like a few dozen gun-nuts would ever make something like that work.

But it's interesting how delusional these people really are. It's some sort of underpants gnomes logic where you:

    1) Storm the government buildings, kill the representatives.
    2) ???
    3) You lead the new government, and there's a rainbow.

They sound like fucking idiots, even if they managed to enter an administrative building and cause mayhem, they would've been wiped by the GSG/SEK special force units in under an hour. Who the fuck thinks taking over a country is viable with a few dozen people that have zero support?

Ummm...well, we had our own idiots in the US back on January 6th 2021. It's disheartening to know that other countries have their own willing to go to such lengths. Usually any country across the pond is more about talking...and voting their idiocy in.

From plans that have surfaced in the past, they are mostly accelerationists, trying to start some kind of civil war then seize power in the chaos.

Also, as usual, there's special forces and former military personnel among the conspirators. In fact, Germany had to terminate one of their special forces groups entirely last year because it was nazified beyond redemption.

Morons who don't understand the difference between what the building is representative of, and the institution itself.

Not really worth trying to read into the motivations of nutters any more than that.

I personally find it hardly surprising to be honest, I fully expect each and every last nation on this planet having a political splinter group trying to achieve a coup. After all fringe elements exist everywhere, so I would find it rather odd if some among them would not try to get rid of their government.

Not quite true, understanding their motivations and methods, makes it easier to thwart them.

I would trust GSG9 and their awesome reputation much more if there weren't recurrig reports that these tinfoil-hat dudes have special forces amongst them. Again, who watches the watchers?

While I wouldn't be surprised if there was someone in Russia who was willing to help, it seems that the involved groups are linked loosely with Russia's groups, banned in Russia for being too extreme even for Putin.

They're useful morons for Russia that gets to point at the EU and say "look how divided they are, and they have fascists!" after bankrolling said groups.

To be honest it's...refreshing(?)...to see another authoritarian regime picked a role model, 1930-1940's Germany is getting a bit cliché.

As a KGB officer, Putin was personally involved in recruiting German neo-Nazis to sow discontent in Western Germany. Do not think that a spy agency will look away from someone their own masters detest if they can use them as an asset.

The funny thing is that the bureaucracy is actually a major barrier to any of these types of schemes working. It doesn't matter if you take the building that the lawmaking is done in, if the bureaucracy doesn't support your takeover then your ability to actually run a country is zero. And none of these militia groups have even close to the manpower required to replace the entire civil service of a country the size of Germany with anyone, much less actually qualified people.

Nobody ever accuses fascists of being intelligent.

If we start it, it'll spread like wildfire.
All the Real (X) here will support us if we take that first step.
Everyone is tired of the (Y) and their (A, B, C). EVERYONE.
It's up to us to start it, the rest fall into place because we're the good guys in this.
    The good guys always win.

The danger here is, if you somehow manage to take over the bureaucratic body, what you do with it is pretty much up to you and it'll do it. Nazi Germany is a good example of bureaucracy doing horrible things, because everyone justified their own little task as just a small part and they "didn't know" the whole picture.
