There is no cut to the amount of money people are getting from SNAP, just what they can buy. There is no cut cost savings, in fact, just the opposite, the only change is that even MORE perfectly good food goes in the trash.

And conservatives were spreading it all over social media like it was some kind of major gotcha against welfare. It was even on this very forum back before the right wingers went mask off and got banned. Their line was that microwaves and AC were a LUXURY.

I'm sure that fancy things like "AC" and "Microwaves" and "refrigerators" were considered luxury items only the middle class and up were expected to have... back in the 1950s, when these people's political ideologies were instantiated.

The reason HFC is subsidized and healthy vegetables arent is corn got the biggest lobby. Want to change this? Campaign donations go to opposition and you are out. You would need to change the political system to fix current situation. Secondary the whole food stamp idea is already about limiting what they can buy as otherwise you would give money. Initially they said "no money only food stamps so they dont buy booze & drugs with it", going next "okay no garbage food either" is a logical step. As said sole issue is no meat buy my canned tuna looks like someone wants to boost his business. And its typical of lobby work to precede with some sensible points to drag through your actual goal.

It doesn't make sense from that standpoint either. White bread is unhealthy, but canned beans aren't in the vast majority of cases, and canned meat is magnitudes worse than fresh meat.

Considering this is a discussion about a proposed change to SNAP benefits in America, yes, I'm discussing this from an American point of view.

I thought SNAP is like voting in that the states get to administer it, so that's why Iowa can try for this sort of shit with a reasonable chance of it going through

Nope, it is a federal program, all SNAP changes have to go through the department of agriculture, since almost every farm bill has the SNAP part added to it.

Only the US congress can change this, not the Iowa congress, and the Secretary of Agriculture and Congress determines what SNAP benefits can and cannot be used on. Since this is not in the Iowa Budget, they cannot change it.

Just to clarify for everyone still arguing, the IOWA Congress cannot change this program, as it is a federal funded program with the farm bill. The morons in the Iowa legislature cannot change what it can and can't be used on.
