The RNC tried to jettison Trump 8 years ago, they failed because doing so would mean jettisoning most of their voter base.

Maybe they should. Maybe they need to accept that they're gonna tank a few election cycles in order to try and get things back on track, and save the country. Sacrifice power for a few years intentionally to keep some chance of their party existing decades from now.

There is a difference between "we shouldn't invite Uncle Larry to the family reunion because he's a complete wierdo" and "we shouldn't invite Uncle Larry to the family reunion because he's on trial for punching Aunt Jenny, who's hosting the reunion". Even the RNC has a limit, and we'll find out soon enough if Trump pretending there are no Republicans but Trump (i.e. skipping the primaries) is enough.

For the record, I think Trump has put himself in a horrible situation, and I couldn't be happier. He can't run on his record, he did nothing but lose for six years, he's possibly being indicted by the feds and/or Georgia before the first debate, and he'd have to pledge to support the winner even if it's not him. Like, what do you do when applying for a new job when you burned down the old one on purpose? Pretend it didn't happen, or admit it? He has voters, but the RNC might decide "there are levels of survial we are prepared to accept".

We've had 4 years of the of familiy knowing he punched Jenny. They have shown 0 signs of legit dropping Trump.

This thread is full weekly, if not daily, of example of mainstream Republicans who still fully support Trump and his cult.

At some point we need to stop thinking that maybe this time, they will give a shit.

Imagine if Trump died from heart attack this evening, there would be no one to fill that vacuum. The rot(cult) goes down to the very roots of local election committees. RNC and the party dies the moment Trump dies, or if Trump somehow loses a primary and goes third party. Only hope is whatever replaces it is actually pro-democracy.

Sure. I never said that crystalizing around some different post-Trump asshole would make them a viable party again. Just that they can/will find a new figurehead once he's gone.

You have to remember that Trump himself never actually won anything...and he never had the support of the majority of the country (or at least the majority of voters). Clinging to power despite being a minority party is nothing new for the GOP, and unless the Dems can actually step up and make substantive change re:voting rights, it will continue to be true for the foreseeable future.

Word on the street is, the grand jury is meeting tomorrow to vote. Indictment could come as soon as tomorrow for Espionage and Obstruction of Justice for just the documents case.
